Marvel Reveals Best Look at Ms. Marvel’s Costume to Date at International Event

Ms. Marvel fans can finally catch a glimpse of what Kamala Khan’s live-action costume looks like from the front.

A photo shared from a Marvel Studios event in Thailand depicted a Marvel panel that offered waist-high glimpses of both Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight’s costumes. In Ms. Marvel’s case, the Thailand panel not only revealed the design of Kamala Khan’s blue domino mask and how her iconic scarf loops around her neck, but also a series of tapestry designs around the costume’s arms and torso. This included parts of Kamala’s iconic lightning symbol, though the panel moderator’s position blocked most of it, and part of the show’s title, from view.

Promotional material for Ms. Marvel has refrained from offering a full look at Kamala Khan’s live-action costume for the upcoming Disney+ series. Even the first teaser trailer for Ms. Marvel showed Kamala’s costume from a distance or obscured by her new crystalline powers. One notable scene — featured in both the trailer and official TV poster — focuses on Ms. Marvel, portrayed by Iman Vellani, from behind as she observes the Manhattan nighttime skyline atop a lamppost, a clear homage to the Ms. Marvel #5 comic cover.

Created by G. Willow Wilson and Sana Amanat, Kamala Khan debuted in 2013’s Captain Marvel #14 before receiving her own solo series in February 2014. A Muslim-American teenager from Jersey City, Kamala received polymorphic abilities after exposure to Terrigen Mist awakened her Inhuman genes and, inspired by her favorite superhero, took up Captain Marvel’s old moniker as her own. The character has gone on to become one of Marvel’s most popular new heroes, briefly serving as an Avenger before partnering up with Miles Morales, Nova, Viv Vision and Amadeus Cho to form the Champions superhero team. Before her live-action debut, Ms. Marvel had been featured in a number of Marvel properties, most notably the Avengers Assemble cartoon and Marvel’s Avengers video game.

Ms. Marvel will also adapt prominent supporting characters from the comics, such as her older brother Amir and best friend Bruno Carrelli. However, the trailer confirmed that Marvel Studios would change Ms. Marvel’s powers, replacing her polymorph skillset with the ability to create crystal structures like shields and giant fists, a change that was teased in October 2021. The development has polarized fans, some of whom have drawn visual comparisons to the ring constructs from DC’s panned Green Lantern movie. One fan theory also suggested that Marvel did this to distinguish Kamala from Mister Fantastic, both of whom have stretchy powers, when the Marvel Cinematic Universe begins filming its film adaptation of the Fantastic Four.

Ms. Marvel premieres June 8 on Disney+.
