WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Windfall, now streaming on Netflix.
Netflix’s Windfall changes from a dark comedy to a horrific murder thriller as Jason Segel’s eccentric robber, Nobody, holds a couple hostage at their luxurious vacation home. His mission was to initially steal money, jewelry or whatever he could get his hands on, thinking the place was empty, but the CEO (Jesse Plemons) and his Wife (Lily Collins) came home during his robbery. This led him to request a ransom, angry at how the CEO was ruining the world with his capitalist mentality. However, while the trifecta got caught up in drama trying to work things out, the couple-on-the-rocks wasted two key chances at salvation.
The first came when the Gardener arrived at the house, trying to impress the CEO and Wife. He didn’t expect anyone to be home, but showing initiative, he revealed plans he had for up-keeping the place. Nobody, pretending to be a cousin, didn’t like the distraction, and tried to get them to shoo the Gardener away. But things quickly took a dark when the CEO slipped the Gardener an SOS, which made the man try to scurry off.
In response, Nobody rushed outside the house, holding the Gardener at gunpoint. At this moment, however, the couple could easily have walked outside, come up behind Nobody and smashed his head with any of the various mini-statues on the ground. And, not long after, the second instance occurred when the Gardener got scared inside and tried to flee after Nobody fired a shot to intimidate the CEO. Sadly, he tripped and fell, smashing through the glass door and bleeding out from the throat. The frantic Nobody rushed over, dropped the gun and tried to attend to him as he perished.
This was a golden opportunity for the man or woman to go over, feign concern and grab the gun while Nobody’s head was down. Killing the robber or, at least, tying him up and muzzling him would have meant the Gardener wouldn’t have died in vain, and the Wife would have prevented her secret about taking birth control from being spilled by the thief.
But more than that, it also would have spared her from mentally breaking in the finale, which saw her kill the thief and her tied-up husband after reassessing the monsters she was around. Had they been smart and taken these opportunities, the CEO would probably have been able to continue his philandering ways, the Wife would still have the cash for her charity projects, and their facade would have been maintained.
See how the couple wasted their chances in Windfall, now streaming on Netflix.
