The upcoming Morbius film will apparently pave the way for an ensemble film starring some of Spider-Man’s greatest foes: the Sinister Six. That’s according to director Daniel Espinosa, who recently teased greater things coming for Sony’s Spider-Man Universe.
When asked if Vulture’s appearance in Morbius was setting up a Sinister Six film, Espinosa said, “Well, he is recruiting teammates and he has enticed one already. So it sure looks like a start.” The director did not elaborate on whether or not there were any concrete plans for such a film.
Actor Michael Keaton’s appearance in the film was revealed in one of Morbius‘ earliest trailer. Following some amount of speculation from fans, it was later confirmed that he would be reprising his role from Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Homecoming, in which he played Adrian Toomes, also known as the supervillain, Vulture. While this was previously believed to establish a connection between Sony’s universe and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it was recently explained that Toomes’ appearance was made possible through the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and the establishing of the multiverse.
In the same interview, Espinosa explained, “At the end of VENOM: LET THERE BE CARNAGE and SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME, and in NO WAY HOME itself, it is clearly established that it is possible for characters to transfer from one Multiverse to another.” He continued, “The events of NO WAY HOME had the effect of transferring Venom and Vulture (and maybe others ) back and forth between the MCU and the Venom Universe.”
The limited connection between Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the MCU was introduced in the post-credits scenes of Venom: Let There Be Carnage and No Way Home. The former saw Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock transported into the MCU and introduced to Spider-Man, who the symbiote was somehow already aware of. The No Way Home post-credits scene saw Brock learning more about the MCU before being transported away without really interacting with it. However, his presence will potentially be felt, as a piece of the symbiote was left behind in the MCU.
After a series of delays spanning years, Morbius saw its first screening in London and according to reports, reactions have not been good. Critics call the film messy and even confusing. One even readied audiences for what they described as the worst post-credits scene audiences have ever seen.
