After earning another $20.5 million during its fourth weekend in theaters, The Batman has brought in a total of $331.951 million at the domestic box office.
In less than a month since its wide release, DC’s latest film has surpassed the domestic earnings of movies like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad and Justice League. In other words, The Batman‘s take on the Dark Knight has already outperformed the DC Extended Universe version of the character in the United States. Furthermore, The Batman has surpassed Iron Man 2, Deadpool 2 and Thor: Ragnarok domestically. According to Forbes, it’s also expected to pass films like Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man: Homecoming and Joker at the domestic box office in the coming days.
The Batman will soon hold the title of DC’s second-biggest non-sequel superhero movie in the U.S., behind Wonder Woman ($412.5 million). It’s also on track to become Warner Bros.’ fourth-biggest superhero movie ever domestically, behind only Wonder Woman, The Dark Knight ($533 million) and The Dark Knight Rises ($449 million). The Batman’s $673 million worldwide gross puts it past other Warner Bros. projects like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald ($655 million) and the aforementioned Justice League ($658 million), making it the studio’s fourth-biggest film since 2017, behind only It ($700 million) Joker ($1 billion) and Aquaman ($1.1 billion).
One thing that could curb The Batman’s extended box office success is its HBO Max streaming date, with the film confirmed to be hitting the streaming service in mid April, a month and a half after its theatrical release. In the past, films of The Batman’s stature have generally enjoyed exclusive theatrical windows of three months or more. With that time being cut by over 50 percent, Warner Bros. could potentially miss out on even more box office revenue. The film was also dethroned as box office king in its fourth week in theaters, finally falling to the $31 million opening weekend of the Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum-led romantic comedy The Lost City.
As well as being a massive commercial success, The Batman has also been a hit among fans and critics alike. The film currently holds an 85 percent critic rating and 88 percent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a 72 (generally favorable reviews) Metacritic rating. Two HBO Max spinoff series have already been greenlit, with talk of a sequel circulating.
The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves and stars Robert Pattinson as the Caped Crusader opposite Zoë Kravitz as Catwoman, Paul Dano as The Riddler, Colin Farrel as The Penguin and Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon. The film follows Batman as he attempts to stop Riddler’s killing spree and uncover a mystery of corruption within Gotham.
The Batman is currently in theaters and will be available to stream on HBO Max on April 19.
