James Bond Reality Competition Show Heading to Amazon’s Prime Video

Prime Video has greenlit a James Bond-inspired reality competition show, which will be the first television program based on the British spy.

As reported by Variety, the show will be titled 007’s Road to a Million, for which casting is currently underway and contestants have been encouraged to apply. The eight-episode competition series will put contestants — who will compete in two-person teams — in a race around the world as they challenge their minds and bodies in order to win £1 million, or $1.3 million USD.

007’s Road to a Million will be filmed in various iconic locations featured throughout the James Bond filmography, though specific locales have not yet been revealed. The competition will challenge the contestant’s intelligence and endurance through a variety of obstacles, with each team needing to answer a series of questions that have been hidden all over the world in order to move on to the next challenge. 007’s Road to a Million is produced by Britain’s 72 Films, MGM Television and James Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson of Eon Productions. The series does not yet have a release date.

The announcement of 007’s Road to a Million comes almost a year after Amazon’s $8.45 billion purchase of MGM in May 2021. At the time, Broccoli and Wilson confirmed that they were still “committed to continuing to make James Bond films for the worldwide theatrical audience.” While Amazon now has financial and distribution rights over all of the Bond movies, Eon Productions maintains creative control over the films, including the franchise’s marketing and casting aspects.

At the time of the Amazon/MGM merger, screenwriter John Logan, who co-wrote 2012’s Skyfall and 2015’s Spectre, expressed concern over how the deal would impact the franchise at large. “Having worked as a writer on Skyfall and Spectre, I know that Bond isn’t just another franchise, not a Marvel or a DC; it is a family business that has been carefully nurtured and shepherded through the changing times by the Broccoli/Wilson family,” he said in a June 2021 interview.

“What happens if a bruising corporation like Amazon begins to demand a voice in the process?” Logan continued. “What happens to the comradeship and quality control if there’s an Amazonian overlord with analytics parsing every decision?” The most recent addition in the Bond film franchise was No Time To Die, which premiered in October 2021 and saw Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007.

007’s Road to a Million will premiere on Prime Video and does not yet have a release date.
