Moon Knight Star Indicates Potential for More Stories Beyond the Miniseries

Ethan Hawke says fans might see his Moon Knight character appear in future Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.

During an interview with IGN, Hawke — who plays the villainous cult leader Dr. Arthur Harrow in the series — was asked if he or his co-star Oscar Isaac (who headlines as Steven Grant/Marc Spector/Moon Knight) approached the project as just a miniseries, or if they expect to see these characters return at some point. “The good news is that it’s possibly both,” Hawke answered. “It lives and breathes on its own merits, it functions as a limited series — and if people are engaged and excited by it then it could be the origin story of a larger thing.”

Both Hawke and Isaac have said that one of the factors that drew them both to Moon Knight was its disconnect to the larger MCU. Isaac stated that the show has “a similar approach” to the first Iron Man movie, since the cast and crew are “building this thing from the ground up” while the rest of Marvel continuity is “not part of the story — [Moon Knight] rests on its own terms, and it’s really an internal exploration of [the character].” Hawke added, “I was so happy when we first talked about this that it was disconnected, because it gives us so much more freedom. And as an audience member it’s what I want, I want to not know what’s going to happen.”

Executive producer Grant Curtis has reiterated Moon Knight‘s lack of ties to the MCU. He described the series as one about self-discovery. “It’s a story about identity and finding one’s true self,” he explained. “The journey that Marc Spector is on during our whole show is: Who am I? And how do I reconcile portions of my past, present and potential future that I don’t necessarily agree with? Coming to terms with our baggage and learning to live with ourselves is what we all deal with on a day-to-day basis.”

Even still, fans and creators alike have their own hopes for Moon Knight’s future in the MCU. Isaac has stated he wants to see his antihero team up with other, darker Marvel characters to form the Midnight Sons. “Imagine, with Punisher, Ghost Rider, Daredevil… I think that would be a very interesting group,” he said. Similarly, co-star May Calamawy, who plays Layla El-Faouly, has expressed interest in seeing Moon Knight team up with his fellow magical hero Doctor Strange.
