The Winchesters has found its younger version of Sam and Dean Winchester’s parents.
According to Deadline, Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger will play Mary and John, respectively, in the prequel. Donnelly is known for her roles on such programs as American Housewife and Zombies. Rodger, for his part, is known for his roles in Murder RX and The In Between.
Announced in 2021, The Winchesters centers on John and Mary, who are the parents of Sam and Dean Winchester, the protagonists of Supernatural. In the series, John has recently returned from fighting in the Vietnam War and ends up meeting Mary Campbell, who is both a hunter and his future wife. The Winchesters takes place before the events of Supernatural, though the series will see Jensen Ackles reprising his role as Dean and serving as the show’s narrator. The Winchesters was given a pilot order in February.
Debuting in 2005 on The WB, which later became The CW, Supernatural ended in 2020 after a record-breaking 15 seasons. Currently, the show, which followed hunters Sam and Dean as they dealt with paranormal events and villains, is the longest-running live-action fantasy TV series ever. Supernatural was generally well-received and the series developed a cult following over its time on the air.
There have been several attempts at making a Supernatural spin-off series in the past. In addition to webisodes focused on the Ghostfacers and an anime, Supernatural Season 9, Episode 20, served as a backdoor pilot for a series titled Bloodlines that explored the clash of hunter and monster culture. However, The CW declined to pick up the show. Later, The CW worked on a series called Wayward Sisters, which focused on Sheriff Jody Mills (Kim Rhodes). While Supernatural once again featured a backdoor pilot for the show, The CW did not pick up the project.
Following the end of Supernatural, Ackles was cast as Soldier Boy in The Boys Season 3, which is slated to premiere late this year. Jared Padalecki, who played Sam, has since moved on to star as the titular Texas Ranger in The CW’s Walker, which is a reboot of the classic TV series starring Chuck Norris.
At this time, The Winchesters does not have an official premiere date. Donnelly and Rodger join already-announced cast members Nida Khurshi and Jojo Fleites.
