A popular series coming to an unexpected end can be quite jarring, particularly if that series ends on a cliffhanger. That’s exactly what happened to My Name is Earl after Season 4, leaving a lot of dangling plot threads behind its cancelation, but the show’s creator hid some closure in the pilot for his next series, Raising Hope, which answered at least one major question.
When fans first met Earl Hickey, he was a low-life degenerate with a terrible life, but it was terrible because he made it that way. Earl spent his entire life being an absolutely awful person who committed a virtually non-stop string of petty crimes, not to mention more than a few felonies. However a lottery win, an accident and some wisdom from Carson Daly changed the course of his destiny to something a lot more fulfilling.
Earl made a list of all the bad things he did and decided to make each one of them right. His mission made the lives of a lot of people better, including those closest to him, like Joy, Darnell, Catalina and his brother, Randy. The odyssey of Earl’s list would continue across four seasons.
The vast majority of the series was inventive, funny and engaging, but My Name is Earl was canceled after Season 4, Episode 27. Here, much to the surprise of Joy and Earl, her eldest son Dodge turned out to be Earl’s, and Darnell found out he wasn’t the father of Earl Jr., despite everyone thinking he was for four years. Even worse, fans never found out if Earl finished his list.
As it turned out, show creator Greg Garcia let eagle-eyed viewers know in the pilot of his next series how things had worked out for Earl. Raising Hope focused on a young man who knocked up a serial killer and was awarded custody of their child when she ended up on death row. In Season 1, Episode 1, a news broadcast in the background of a scene talked about a crook who had finished making amends for all of the wrongs he did.
While Earl’s name was never spoken, the news broadcast was obviously talking about Earl Hickey. It was nice to know that Earl eventually finished his list. That being said, this moment didn’t exactly resolve the cliffhangers of the final episode of My Name is Earl. Joy seemed to know who Earl Jr.’s real father was. Unfortunately, that tidbit of information was being saved for Season 5, Episode 1.
Ironically, Raising Hope was also cancelled after Season 4. Other than the pilot, no other mention of the ending of My Name is Earl came up in the series, but it’s reassuring to know that Earl Hickey didn’t give up on his goal and managed to cross off every item on his list. However, it would have been nice to see how his version of karma rewarded Earl for completely turning his life around.
