Windfall’s Ending, Explained | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Windfall, now streaming on Netflix.

Netflix’s Windfall painted a harrowing picture of a dysfunctional marriage when the CEO (Jesse Plemons) and his Wife (Lily Collins) came out to their luxury vacation home, only to find it being robbed by Nobody (Jason Segel). The mysterious man, clearly not a killer, held them hostage, blundering through negotiations because he had no clue how to pull this job off now that he was made.

It led to the arrogant CEO calling for $500,000 to be delivered to them to send the gunman on his way, however, the waiting period caused a lot of tension as the couple’s personal demons spilled out. The dark comedy then created a shocking ending filled with murder and, ultimately, liberation for one soul.

In the final act, the fed-up CEO tried to flex his power and leave, only for Nobody to fire his gun. It caused the Gardener who stumbled upon the plot to flee. Sadly, he tripped and fell through the glass door, bleeding out through his throat. The Wife blamed the CEO because he left the caretaker an SOS note, thus pulling him into danger.

She hated how the CEO always tried to control things, not caring for anyone else. This was tied to his toxic masculinity and white privilege, which saw him emotionally abuse her and cheat on her in the past. It fueled Nobody’s rage even more as it’s hinted the CEO created an algorithm in the tech industry that put many people out of work. Nobody might have been one of them, incensed how these elite people can quickly make or break people like him and the Gardener.

What Did Nobody Do In Windfall?

The Wife kept trying to bond with Nobody in the film, firstly because her husband wanted her to in order to defuse the situation. But later, she connected with him seeing as she married the CEO to advance her own life too, despite knowing the kind of man he was. It was something she regretted because he lorded money over her and made her a dependent pawn that couldn’t escape.

However, after the money came and the gunman prepped to leave, Nobody made it clear he didn’t care for any of them because he knew they’d go on about their rich lives. With the husband tied up in the kitchen, he did drop a bombshell to hurt him, however. He confessed the tech mogul would always be alone because while he wanted a family, the Wife was secretly taking birth control pills. This was her secret way of regaining independence, whilst also not making the mistake of starting a family to get further trapped with this narcissist.

How Did The Wife Fight Back In Windfall?

This was the ultimate betrayal because the Wife sympathized with the man as a tragic villain who wanted to walk in the CEO’s shoes. Thus, after she got a shard of glass from the Gardener accident, she cut herself free, grabbed a statue and ran out the door when Nobody bent over to tie his shoelace. She snuck up and smashed Nobody’s head a couple times, killing him.

She then took the gun, but while her husband begged to be let go, she shot him. The Wife had had enough of men ruining her life and slowly walked out. She placed the weapon in Nobody’s hands to frame him, exhaling as she took in the night breeze. While she was visibly shaken from the ordeal, the Wife was finally cut loose from all the men who tried to sate their egos with power.
