After 20th Century Fox’s adaptation of the X-Men, many fans of the franchise were upset that Wolverine never got a comic-accurate costume. Throughout the first three films, the fan-favorite mutant wore black leather jackets. However, in X-Men: Days of Future Past, Logan dons a costume reminiscent to that of the comics but still not fully comic-accurate.
In a deleted scene from The Wolverine, a suitcase is given to Logan where fans catch a glimpse of a comic book accurate version of his costume. Now with Disney buying 20th Century Fox, it’ll only be a matter of time until the X-Men are brought back to the big screen. The question is, which comic book version of Wolverine’s costume should the mutant wear in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut?
The History of Wolverine’s Classic Costume
The classic costume designed by John Romita first appeared in 1974 and was inspired by the Michigan Wolverines football team colors. Logan’s first costume had a very animalistic look to it, even containing whisker markings on his mask and sides. Despite this, he was not given his signature cowl until Wolverine appeared in Giant-Size X-Men #1 when he was accidentally given a cowl by the artist Gil Kane. While this was a mistake on Kane’s side, it was so popular that Wolverine began wearing the iconic cowl from then on.
During Canadian artist John Byrne’s run on the character, he had a different vision for Logan’s costume that differed from past iterations. Previously, Logan acquired a new costume from another character, Fang. Bryne changed this and made Logan a new costume that was a lot more muted with shades of brown and a warmer yellow in comparison to the bright and bold coloring of his previous costumes.
However, when Logan began having more solo adventures, his costume once again underwent a dramatic transformation. Gone were the shades of brown and warm yellow, and in its place was a completely black skinsuit. During this time, Logan adopted the alias known as “Patch.” After his run as Patch was over, the costume was discarded.
Which Custom Will Wolverine Sport in the MCU?
The MCU has a tendency for characters to evolve into their comic book identity over time. This is also reflected in the early costumes of their heroes. For example, Peter Parker’s first Spider-Man suit was merely blue sweatpants, a red hoodie and custom goggles, along with his homemade web-shooters. With this in mind, it’s likely that Wolverine will get a costume reminiscent of his black “Patch” outfit or perhaps even appear in street clothes and eventually grow into his comic book costume. Alternatively, it’s also possible that Logan will start off with a costume that is comic-inspired and later gets an upgraded suit that is comic accurate, much like his comic book counterpart.
