The Umbrella Academy is dropping its highly-anticipated third season this spring, some two years after its Season 2 finale. Following the Hargreeves siblings — a group of adopted children all born on the same day with various super-powers — the Netflix series diverged from the original comic book (a trend that will continue in Season 3) yet still brought Gerard Way’s vision to life on the small screen. But what’s in store when the series finally returns?
Season 2 saw the siblings, led by Vanya (played by Elliot Page), having time-jumped back to 1963 and trying to prevent another massive catastrophe. It ended on a wild cliffhanger with the reveal that the Hargreeves siblings didn’t return to their own timeline, but instead to a dystopian reality where their father was alive and well — with a new and improved team of super-siblings to replace them. The Hargreeves Meet the Sparrows in the Season 3 Teaser
The last moments of Season 2 revealed the Sparrows, an uber-cool team of young heroes trained by Sir Reginald Hargreeves in the same way he trained the original Umbrella Academy. Though their appearance in the Season 2 finale was brief, the scene provided enough information to deduce that the Sparrows possess some kind of cube-like blob of goo — and a pseudo-version of the Hargreeves’ departed brother Ben.
While the teaser for Season 3 of The Umbrella Academy is less than 30 seconds long, it hints at a face-off between the Hargreeves and the Sparrows. The new team is also featured in the Season 3 character posters, so it’s clear that they’re going to play a major role in the upcoming set of episodes. Since they also have super-powers, they’ll present tough opposition. That naturally prompts a big question: Which team will remain standing when Season 3 ends?
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Plot
The official Season 3 plot synopsis from Netflix states that the Sparrows and Hargreeves will collide — but that will just be the beginning of their problems. While trying to navigate their new relationship with an alternate version of themselves, the Hargreeves will also have to try and stop yet another apocalypse, plus find a way back to their original timeline. That’s a lot of trouble to pack into ten episodes.
Netflix explains that the Hargreeves will have to overcome their differences with the Sparrows if they’re to accomplish any of these goals. “All they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong,” the synopsis says. It also mentions “challenges, losses and surprises” ahead in the new season.
The Umbrella Academy Season 3 Release Date
Almost two whole years after The Umbrella Academy‘s second season ended on that jaw-dropping cliffhanger, the teaser finally revealed Season 3’s official release date. The Hargreeves and Sparrows will begin battling it out June 22, once again exclusively on Netflix. The whole season is expected to be released on the same day.
There’s no denying that The Umbrella Academy has amassed a huge fan following, and viewers are ready for the super-powered Hargreeves siblings to grace the streaming platform once again. Bringing back the core cast while also adding fresh faces to the series — like Degrassi: The Next Generation‘s Jake Epstein and Euphoria’s Javon Walton — Season 3 promises to have even more in store for the quirky heroes and the audience that’s waited so long for their return.
