WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Season 2 of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, now streaming on Netflix.
Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe: Revelation divided the He-Man fan base, leaving fans angry how it shifted from a story revolving around Prince Adam and the Sword of Power to Teela as the new Sorceress and Chosen One meant to save Eternia. However, while most concerns were assuaged by the time Part 2 aired last December, one aspect that folks couldn’t knock was the big twist with Skeletor.
Many thought he died early on fighting He-Man, but Skeletor actually left his essence around, possessing Evil-Lyn to be his unwitting vessel. The other Netflix show revolving around Eternia, He-Man & the Masters of the Universe, remixed this twist in Season 2, giving the tyrant yet another big victory.
In Revelation, Skeletor imbued the top of the Havoc Staff with his soul after it was damaged in the war that killed him. Lyn kept it and used this Ram’s Head in his absence, not realizing he was corrupting her on her quest for redemption. It allowed him to be reborn, kill Adam once more and seize the Power of Grayskull, becoming Skelegod. He’d then recruit Lyn back to his side, ready to enslave the planet. Thankfully, Part 2 had her rebuking him, helping He-Man return so they could topple the fiend once more.
He-Man & the Masters of the Universe followed a similar approach when the Havoc Staff was damaged in the Battle of Avion. This broke Skeletor’s hold on Beast Man and Trap-Jaw, allowing them to flip sides and turn him in. He-Man and his crew eventually combined their power and shattered the staff, sucking Skeletor into a Havoc vortex that seemed to kill him. However, before he disintegrated, he was able to grab Krass/Ram-Ma’am and leave his essence in her helmet.
The helmet contained the Ram Stone, which was connected to Havoc, allowing him to haunt her when they got back to Eternia. It’s a bit different to Revelation where he manipulated Lyn secretly, while here, he played on Krass’ insecurities. He got her to believe Adam and the royals would forget about her, promising if she united the Sigil of Hiss, he’d bring her family back after they died in a cave-in. This made it more personal, understandable and tragic compared to Lyn, who wanted power and to prove herself to her skeletal-lover.
Ultimately, Krass stole the relics and the staff, powering up to become Rampage, Master of Destruction. But this time, rather than Skelegod controlling Lyn’s power, this Skeletor was a ghoul at Krass’ side, mentoring and encouraging the godlike being to cause chaos with the snake zombies from the Hiss Army.
Thus, whilst Revelation was a temporary physical win, this one is a spiritual win too, shattering Adam who didn’t expect his “sister” to betray him. It added more depth and emotion, leaving He-Man desperate to formulate a plan to heal Krass’ mind and bring her back to the light.
