Starfield Video Encourages Players to Tell Their Own Story | CBR

Bethesda’s latest update video on Starfield sees the developers discuss the game’s various factions, companions and choices that players can use to craft their own story.

The video features game director Todd Howard talking with various key Starfield designers, including Design Director Emil Pagliarulo, Lead Quest Designer Will Shen and Lead Artist Istvan Pely. The group opens up about the goal of Starfield which is made to encourage players to build their own adventure and effectively roleplay. “The more we can put you in the situation where you’re going to decide – that’s what makes video games the best form of entertainment that they are,” says Howard.

Bethesda fans looking for a game that includes a wealth of deep character customization are in luck. “We’ve always allowed the player to create really unique and interesting characters,” said Pely. “[Starfield] definitely severely leveled-up. The tech is based on scanning real-world models, similar to the photogrammetry we do for our landscapes. We’re kind of applying the same thing to our people as well.”

Arguably the most noteworthy moment of the video features the potential debut of one of the game’s companion characters. The footage includes a brief clip of a large bipedal robot basked in low-light and shadows. After briefly looking around the room, the droid looks into the camera and simply says, “Hello, Captain. How may I be of assistance?” It’s currently unknown whether the robot is classified as a “companion” or just an NPC that will be able to help the player around their ship.

Starfield is the latest title from Bethesda Game Studios and will serve as the company’s first original IP in over two decades. Players will join forces with an organization known as Constellation, a space-faring group dedicated to exploring the galaxy and broadening humanity’s horizons. Beyond the NASA-inspired scientists, gamers will be able to join a vast assortment of different intergalactic factions, including The United Colonies, the Freestar Collective and even the Crimson Fleet, a slowly-expanding gang of space pirates.

In terms of scale, fans can expect Starfield to be Bethesda’s biggest project to date. Howard has previously mentioned that the game includes a script that features over 150,000 lines of dialogue. In comparison, Fallout 4‘s script featured 111,000 lines.

Starfield launches on Nov. 11 exclusively for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
