A Green Lantern cosplayer has shared a stunningly accurate take on Sojourner “Jo” Mullein, the main protagonist of N.K. Jemisin and Jamal Campbell’s Far Sector.
On Instagram, cosplayer Ony, aka gundambae, posted her Jo Mullein costume, which features a faithful recreation of the character’s suit, gloves and even the visor-like glasses that almost appear to float in front of her face. Ony revealed how exactly the glasses stay on: “dress tape and a prayer.” She also posted a few pieces of artwork from Far Sector, as well as a photo of herself holding the series’ first issue. Ony cites Campbell’s art as being one of her favorite aspects of the book.
Created by Jemisin and Campbell, Jo Mullein/Green Lantern first appeared in Far Sector #1, which was published under DC’s Young Animal imprint in November 2019. Written be Jemisin and illustrated by Campbell with letters by Deron Bennett, Far Sector ran for a total of 12 issues through June 2021. Following her debut in Jemisin and Campbell’s Young Animal series, Jo started to pop up elsewhere under the main DC banner.
A profile of the character was featured in Green Lantern 80th Anniversary 100-Page Super Spectacular, which was published in mid-2020, confirming Jo Mullein was part of the main DC Universe. She also factored into the Generations: Shattered one-shot and the Future State event in early 2021. Around that same time, she appeared as a vision in an issue of Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp’s The Green Lantern: Season Two. A little later on, she factored into Infinite Frontier #0.
Jo has since gone on to appear in several issues of DC’s main Green Lantern series, which was relaunched around mid-2021. She was also featured in the 2021 DC Pride anthology and is slated to return for the 2022 edition, even being featured on the cover this time around. More recently, Far Sector‘s Green Lantern has appeared within the pages of Suicide Squad.
In a 2019 interview with Gizmodo, Jemisin credited Young Animal curator Gerard Way for coming up with the idea for Jo Mullein. “He contacted me and was like, ‘You want to do a Green Lantern? A Young Animal-style Green Lantern, basically.’ And he wanted to call them Far Sector — he had the name in mind already. ‘And we want it to involve the first known Green Lanterns in this unique society,'” she said.
Jemisin went on to discuss her approach to the Green Lantern mythos and Jo Mullein, an ex-police officer who had grown disillusioned with the NYPD. “My first thought is they’re a giant organization of police, so I need to treat them like a giant organization of police,” she said. “Even though Jo is going to be effectively the frontier sheriff compared to the rest of them, she’s not in any contact with the rest of the Lantern Corps at this point.”
