Rare’s hit multiplayer pirate game Sea of Thieves got off to a rocky start in 2018, but it has handily recovered in recent years. Starting in 2021, Sea of Thieves has rolled out new content in a season format, with each season running about 14 weeks.
Season Six started in March 2022, and will run until June. Season Six includes several new exciting gameplay opportunities for pirates to explore, as well as the customary new season reward track and a host of bugfixes. Anyone looking to get the most out of the new season’s content should read up on what it has to offer.
9 Sea Forts Offer New Combat Opportunities
The hallmark new feature in Season Six is the introduction of Sea Forts. These stone fortresses have been raised from the deeps by the ghost of Captain Flameheart, and are crawling with phantoms. Players will need to brave a hail of cannon fire as they approach the fort, then battle an army of phantoms. Each fort has several vaults and larders, crammed to the brim with ethereal treasure. Once players sieze the fort, they can make use of the Homestead room, complete with a stove, map, grog barrels, and other amenities. There are six Sea Forts in all, one for each region of the Sea of Thieves.
8 New Options In The Renown Track
With each new Sea of Thieves season comes a new seasonal Renown track. As players complete quests and journey the sea, they will earn Renown and be rewarded with gold, doubloons, ancient coins, and new cosmetic items.
Many of these items are spring-themed, including the egg-shaped Springshell Pocketwatch and the rabbit-themed Warring Warren cannons. Also included is the Naval Commander clothing set, which has a striking gold and red color scheme.
7 The Plunder Pass Is Back
Also returning from previous seasons is the Plunder Pass. This premium option will enhance the rewards that players receive as they gain Renown. In addition to extra ancient coins, players who purchase the Plunder Pass will receive the Forest’s Blessing costume, which changes as the player advances along the track. This matches well with the Spring Blossom ship livery set, which is a lovely gold and wood theme complete with pink blossoms.
6 New Weapons From The Emissary Ledgers
Sea of Thieves pirates can choose to sail under the flag of several different organizations as emissaries, earning bonus rewards for certain tasks. In Season Six, each Emissary Ledger now unclocks a new skin for the Blunderbuss and the Eye of Reach. There are five trading companies to choose from, including the Athena’s Fortune, accessible only to pirates of Legendary status. Athena’s Fortune differs from the other four in Season Six in that it awards cannons, sails, and flags instead of weapon skins.
5 Gone Is The Arena
Starting on March 10th, 2022, Sea of Thieves no longer features an arena mode. Rewards earned from the arena mode will remain attached to a player’s account, but no further progress can be made. This change was announced several months before it took effect, and a January blog post gave some insight into the decision. Only about 2% of players’ time was spent in the arena mode, not nearly enough to justify its continued support. The arena was intended to offer a competitive option, but its removal is demonstrative of a change in design philosophy.
4 New Emporium Costumes And Emotes
With each new season, the Pirate Emporium sees a host of new items added for players to purchase. Season Six is no exception, with several weapon sets, outfits, and ship livery available.
The Islehopper Outlaw costume features a purple and brown color scheme, and has a built-in banjo-smashing emote. Not everything requires purchase, however. The Jolly Jiggle emote is available to all players for free, allowing them to show their joy.
3 New Adventures And Voyages
In addition to the unstructured Sea Fort encounters, Season Six introduces new adventures and voyages for players to embark upon. The Shrouded Islands adventure, available from February 17th – March 3rd, teased some of the content eventually released in Season Six, as it featured phantoms laying siege to various islands. Later in this season, there will be a Part 2 to this adventure to continue the story. Legendary pirates can look forward to the Legend of the Veil voyage, featuring a new kind of treasure map leading to mysterious Veil Stones.
2 Tons Of Bugfixes
Every big update includes a host of bugfixes and quality of life improvement, and Season Six has several big ones. Players can now quickly scroll between their quest maps by using the D-pad on controller or the A and D keys while holding a map, for instance.
In order to make room for the new Sea Forts, Skeleton Ship encounters have now been concentrated in the center of the map instead of being scattered throughout the world. The patch notes also indicate significant improvements have been made to the game’s physics, hopefully cutting down on the number of times players will randomly die from hitting a wall wrong.
1 Accessibility Features Are Improved
Video game accessibility is a very important topic, and the latest batch of updates in Sea of Thieves makes some strides in that direction. Players can now turn on labels for the fish they are catching, a process that previously had to be done exclusively by identifying the model. The game’s narration mode has been improved as well, as it will now fully describe the title screen and tell a player their wallet balance while they shop.
