WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Superman & Lois Season 2, Episode 7, “Anti-Hero,” which aired Tuesday, March 8, on The CW.
Superman & Lois’ Season 2 continues to subvert villains in the most intriguing way. Previously, Lex Luthor turned out to be Steel, while Morgan Edge was really Superman’s brother, Tal-Rho, making the Man of Steel think twice about pre-judging people.
The latest twist had Doomsday actually being Bizarro, keeping fans guessing which of Kal-El’s enemies will appear next and how genuine their missions will be. Following the latest development with Ally Allston being a dark god, hellbent on ruling two Earths, there’s now an opening for Darkseid’s daughter, Grail.
Superman & Lois has invited folks over from various dimensions and worlds. Steel, his daughter Natalie, and then Bizarro ventured over, so it’s easy with the Arrowverse merging planets to envision Grail dropping in. Additionally, the plot organically created the path for her arrival due to Ally’s pendant.
Ally enslaved Bizarro’s world with it, building speculation the way she’s submitting planets that she’s actually Granny Goodness. Thus, Grail could either be coming to slay her for Darkseid if Granny went rogue, take the pendant back to him, or maybe use the Anti-Life Equation it could possess for herself. Grail might even have killed or imprisoned her dad, with Ally now running free as part of a power vacuum on Apokolips.
It’d flip the script on the Darkseid lore and continue the show’s theme of legacy, as seen with the Kent Super-Sons, and Lana’s daughter, Sarah. Grail would simply be a Darkseid for a new generation, living up to her warlord billing she got when Geoff Johns and Ryan Fabok created her for 2015’s Justice League. Plus, Superman, Steel and Tal-Rho being pushed to the limit by a strong female warrior who’s known pain and abandonment all her life would indeed make for great TV, forcing the Kent boys to improve as well by realizing she’s their true galactic nemesis.
This show is the perfect testing ground as well, because with the DC Extended Universe yet to figure out what to do with Darkseid after Zack Snyder’s Justice League and the cancellation of Ava Duvernay’s New Gods, it’ll be some time before Grail ever hits the big screen. Not even cartoons and animated movies brought her into play, so Superman & Lois would be proactive on this front. And ultimately, Grail arriving opens the door further for a myriad of other characters.
Her Amazonian mom, Myrina, could bring Wonder Woman’s Themyscira into play to hunt the abomination down, while Darkseid’s Furies and Kalibak could visit Earth on behalf of the boss or as part of a civil war. Not to mention, New Genesis’ Orion and the Forever People can come over to fight her too as they wouldn’t want Darkseid’s spawn running free. The possibilities are endless and seeing as the series does CGI spectacles way better than Titans, it’s a perfect match to have Grail asserting dominance on this Earth and prove she’s worthy as Darkseid’s intimidating successor.
To see how Grail could enter the fray, watch Superman & Lois Tuesdays at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on The CW.
