Star Trek: Resurgence Trailer, Plot, Release Date & News to Know

Although the early and mid-2000s were filled with game titles related to the Star Trek franchise, recent years have seen notable efforts become less frequent. The arrival of Star Trek: Bridge Crew on VR platforms was a fun but unfortunately deeply shallow distraction. However, the upcoming release of Star Trek: Resurgence could well turn out to be a watershed moment for fans. Promising an experience that will allow users to engage with key elements from the franchise’s universe, it offers a variety of instantly recognizable details from the myriad television series and movies.

Even though it will not be directly tied into any story content we have seen in other forms, be it television, movies or the newer comic books, there are a litany of promises that Resurgence will do a lot in the way of fan service. From well-known characters from the series canon to instantly recognizable technology and institutions, the game is undoubtedly something fans will be waiting for with bated breath. Here’s everything to know about the upcoming Star Trek adventure game.

Star Trek: Resurgence’s Trailer

Star Trek : Resurgence was revealed during The Game Awards 2021. Since then, developer Dramatic Labs has released two trailers showcasing what the game will offer. The first shows what appears to be the early game, with a character named Carter Diaz under the player’s control. This will be one of the game’s two main playable characters, alongside Jara Rydek (who appears in the second trailer). Both are part of an entirely new crew stationed on an all-new starship. The settings shown in the trailer notably retain the feel of Star Trek, though there has been some limited criticism of the graphics for the characters and facial animations.

The second trailer delivers on the developer’s promise that, despite the entirely new cast, even those with a cursory interest in the series will get to meet some old favorites. None are more iconic than Spock, by this point a Federation Ambassador, who makes an appearance at a briefing between higher-ranking members of the crew. The as-yet-unnamed voice actor for the Vulcan ambassador sounds uncannily like Leonard Nimoy and looks to be a real high point for the production. The trailer hints at the narrative direction for the game and once again showcases the instantly recognizable Trek tech.

What Is Star Trek: Resurgence About?

Many will be pleased to note that the game is set in 2380, immediately following the adventures of Captain Picard and the events of The Next Generation feature films. It is reasonably clear that the war between two races, the Olidians and Hotari, will be the story’s chief focus. In a game made by former Telltale devs, it’s a fairly safe bet that the narrative choices are designed to progress the story in various ways, perhaps even dictating how the conflict plays out. The depth of this element remains unclear though, as games like the official Game of Thrones adaptation provide notable examples of the illusion of choice.

Resurgence will also be played from an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective. It will offer an experience somewhere between other narrative titles like The Walking Dead series and more traditional sci-fi action releases like Mass Effect, a game where the decisions you make genuinely do affect how it plays out.

In what is a departure from the usual formula, great emphasis has been placed on the idea that this is a contained story that will entirely play out across one game rather than being episodic. There will also be significantly more on offer than is shown in the trailers, beyond narrative decision-making. Shuttle piloting, phaser fights, tricorder scanning and stealth mechanics have all been promised by Dramatic Labs, further solidifying the Star Trek feel of the proceedings.

When Will Star Trek: Resurgence Release?

Star Trek: Resurgence is currently scheduled to release sometime in the spring of 2022, although no specific date has currently been made public. The two most recent trailers portray the game in a reasonably polished state. However, with delays presently rife across the industry, there are no guarantees.

That being said, the game itself was only just announced towards the tail end of 2021. It is reasonable to assume the announcement of its impending arrival would have been made with a relatively good idea of how far along the game was in its development. Hopefully, Resurgence is one of the few titles players will get to see sooner rather than later.
