Some anime characters stuck around until the end of their series, despite their immense unpopularity in the fanbase. These characters just rubbed the audience the wrong way, and fans didn’t like them. Regardless of if the character was intended to be comic relief or not, they managed to strike a nerve among viewers — and certainly not in a good way!
While likable characters make the audience root for them to succeed, these unpopular characters had the audience wishing for their downfall as every episode progressed. Unfortunately for viewers, these characters just wouldn’t go away and stayed around until the end.
10 Renge Houshakuji Was An Obnoxious Otaku
Renge Houshakuji from Ouran High School Host Club showed up in front of the members one day because she convinced herself that Kyoya was her soulmate. Her reasoning, of course, was that he perfectly resembled a character from her favorite otome game. Though her infatuation with Kyoya eventually wore off, Renge still decided that she would declare herself the club’s manager.
Renge is wildly unpopular among fans, yet she stayed around until the end. Her tendencies as an otaku were just creepy. She would often rise out of the ground, cackling maniacally before delivering obnoxious, long-winded anecdotes that nobody cared to listen to. Renge forced herself into the club, but fans really wished somebody would force her out.
9 Mahito Really Gives Fans The Creeps
Mahito from Jujutsu Kaisen is a great villain, but he’s wildly unpopular among fans because of his creepiness. Though nobody agrees that Mahito was expertly crafted, fans dislike him for many reasons. For one, he manipulated and took advantage of Junpei when he was very vulnerable. Then, Mahito just killed him off when he was bored of him.
Additionally, his Idle Transfiguration technique is disturbing. With endless possibilities for transformations at his disposal, this technique produces some truly grotesque results. It’s pretty disgusting to watch Mahito mold humans like clay dolls. Mahito can even manipulate his body to fit into tiny places, which produces some hilariously disturbing results in the anime.
8 Akira Takaoka Was A Terrible Teacher
Akira Takaoka from Assassination Classroom proved to be a terrible teacher and eventually became a major antagonist. As a trained soldier, he was called in to prepare the students of Class 3-E to assassinate Koro-Sensei.
He came onto the scene as a helpful individual who was good at understanding young people. However, Akira is actually a guy who loves abusing his power and showing off how strong he is through violence. He’s often beating the kids up and trains them through fear. It’s pretty obvious why Akira is so unpopular.
7 Tomoko Kuroki’s Desperation Gave The Audience Second-Hand Embarrassment
Tomoko Kuroki from Watamote deluded herself into believing that she would be the most popular girl in high school. This is, of course, because she immersed herself in the world of otome games. The characters in these games made her feel like the center of the universe. Unfortunately for Tomoko, things didn’t pan out the way she imagined.
Despite being the protagonist, Tomoko Kuroki was the most unpopular character in this anime. She was so desperate for friends that it was uncomfortable to watch — especially considering how she interacted with other characters. Tomoko would make off-color remarks that were inappropriate for the situation, including one where she made a backhanded compliment towards another girl for her risqué wardrobe malfunction.
6 Hisoka Was Too Obsessed With Gon For The Viewers’ Liking
Hisoka from Hunter X Hunter is one of the biggest creeps in anime. Aside from being a hedonist who only lives for satiating his bloodlust, he had a disturbing obsession with Gon. It’s a hot debate amongst fans whether Hisoka was attracted to Gon or if he was just excited about his strength. Regardless, it’s pretty hard to argue that Hisoka’s behavior was anything less than creepy.
Hisoka would respond in sexualized, lewd ways to Gon, and fans weren’t pleased by his behavior. A grown man having such a reaction to a young boy is undeniably creepy. Fans hate Hisoka, and rightfully so.
5 Sakura Has Never Been Popular Among Fans
A surprisingly controversial character from Naruto is none other than Sakura Haruno. There are a variety of responses evoked from fans about Sakura. The general consensus among fans seems to be that people find her annoying, self-centered, and shallow.
It’s a long-running joke in the fandom that Sakura is the weakest link in Team 7. Fans grew tired of Sakura for her obsessive attraction to Sasuke. Fans also don’t appreciate how often she verbally assaults Naruto by constantly belittling and berating him.
4 Malty Melromarc’s Schemes Aren’t Fooling Anybody
Malty Melromarc from The Rising Of The Shield Hero comes from a noble lineage of the Melromarc kingdom. Almost every family member is kind, helpful, and even humble. However, Malty is an entirely different story. She became one of the most disliked characters across anime because of her horrible actions.
She conspired to have Naofumi banished from the Kingdom. Malty slandered and accused Naofumi of awful things to further cement this scheme and ultimately blacklist her. Ultimately, Malty’s actions made the Kingdom vulnerable to the Waves and made the rest of her family lose trust in her.
3 Ren Yamai Is An Obnoxious Yandere
Komi Can’t Communicate was one of the most popular releases in 2021. Unfortunately, Ren Yamai ruined quite a few episodes of the anime. Since Komi has a severe case of social anxiety, the last type of person she needs around is an obsessive yandere who wants to keep her away from the other friends she’s made.
Everything about Yamai is creepy. She kidnapped Tadano to keep him away from Komi. Yamai even collects several photos of Komi to hang up in her room. When Komi hangs out with her other friends, such as Tadano and Najimi, Yamai crashes it and ruins the scene. Yamai’s obsession with Komi hinders the series, and fans collectively agree that she needs to be cut from the series immediately.
2 Misa Amane Was Insufferable
Death Note is one of the most popular anime of all time. However, fans agree that Misa Amane ruined several scenes. Though she does have a cute aesthetic, her airheaded personality and obsession with Light were just ridiculous. As soon as Misa came into the plot, the storyline got derailed. She’s whiny, childish, and fans overall thought that she was insufferable.
Her personality was a failed attempt at comic relief, and it clashed with the anime’s tone. She only served as a plot device, and fans agree that the show would have functioned just fine without Misa. Perhaps she’s a case of wasted potential, but regardless, fans don’t appreciate her presence.
1 Mineta Minoru Is Universally Hated
Mineta Minoru from My Hero Academia is, without a doubt, one of the most universally despised anime characters. Fans don’t appreciate his behavior towards women, and most of the time, it’s pure sexual harassment. Mineta constantly invades the privacy of the other girls in his class, and he objectifies women far too much. Fans also find his whiny personality insufferable.
Though he’s begun to prove his strengths as a hero just a bit, realistically, nobody wants a hero who is as perverted and demeaning to women as Mineta. Additionally, he crumbles under pressure and runs away crying when something scares him.
