JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R was revealed with a trailer, bringing a new JoJo fighting game to modern systems. This isn’t developer team CyberConnect2’s first time making a JoJo fighting game, as All-Star Battle R is a remake of the first title they created, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle.
All-Star Battle R‘s trailer mainly shows off the game’s roster and stylized graphics. More information has since been revealed on the game’s official website, a PlayStation blog post and on publisher Bandai Namco’s website. Here’s everything that’s been revealed about the upcoming anime fighting game, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R.
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R’s Trailer
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R‘s first trailer arrived during the March 2022 PlayStation State of Play. The trailer confirms nearly every character from the original All-Star Battle will return. The only character from the original who’s not currently confirmed is a crossover character from one of Araki’s other works: Ikuro Hashizawa from Baoh Armed Phenomenon. The trailer also confirmed that the final roster will have 50 playable characters, with 10 more left to be revealed.
The reveal trailer also revealed that the Japanese voice talent from the anime will be reprising their roles in the game, including the cast from Stone Ocean. It also confirms a few details about the gameplay, such as the return of mechanics like Stand Rushes and the fact that the game will be an updated version of the original All-Star Battle‘s combat system. More information regarding how the fighting mechanics have changed was revealed on the game’s Japanese website and from publisher Bandai Namco.
What Is JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R About?
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R is a 2D, 1v1 fighting game that’s meant to deliver the same style and action as the fights from the manga, while also letting fans explore unique matchups that never happened in canon. It’s been confirmed that All-Star Battle R will feature the new All-Star Battle Mode, which will have over 100 matches that recreate fights from across the series and showcase what-if battles that never happened, such as Will A. Zeppeli fighting Kars.
All-Star Battle R is actually a remake of CyberConnect2’s original JoJo fighting game, All-Star Battle. The original game saw much enjoyment from JoJo fans, though its gameplay wasn’t enough to keep competitive fighting game fans interested. All-Star Battle R is aiming to provide a much deeper competitive experience while also still being appealing to JoJo fans. The original All-Star Battle is difficult to obtain outside of Japan, and is only available digitally on PlayStation 3 via the PlayStation Store.
News To Know About JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R
Two characters from Golden Wind, Trish Una and Prosciutto, were accidentally revealed through promotional screenshots from All-Star Battle R‘s official Japanese website. The roster is set to include many fan-favorite characters, like Jotaro Kujo, DIO, Will A. Zeppeli and Jolyne Kujo, to name a few. It’s likely that some names, such as the enigmatic King Crimson, will have their names changed in localized versions of the game to avoid copyright infringement.
According to an article from publisher Bandai Namco, the biggest change from the original All-Star Battle is the Support Attack system. Players can pick an assist character from the main roster and summon them for an attack. It is currently unknown if players can swap between the two characters they select, as in Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, though this may allow the tag-team special moves from Eyes of Heaven to return.
The battle system has also received a number of tweaks. According to the game’s official website, All-Star Battle R‘s tempo has been adjusted and new mechanics, such as jump dashes and hit stops, have been implemented. Hit stops refer to when characters in a fighting game pause in place during the impact of an attack. The original All-Star Battle was criticized by fighting game fans for its pace, so these changes are likely meant to increase the game’s competitive appeal. It’s also been revealed that unlike the original, All-Star Battle R will feature online multiplayer.
When Will JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R Release?
According to the March 2022 State of Play, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure All-Star Battle R will release in the early fall of 2022. This likely points to a late August or September release date, though nothing specific has been confirmed. Unlike CyberConnect2’s other JoJo fighting games, All-Star Battle R is not a PlayStation exclusive. The game will release on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC.
It should also be noted that players who purchase the PlayStation 4 version are able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free. The Japanese website also confirms a physical release for the PS4, though it’s unknown if this will be available outside of Japan. It’s also currently unknown whether the game will be available for preorders or if there will be any post-launch DLC.
