Nami is the least-liked character in One Piece for many viewers. Her weakness in comparison to other main characters is perhaps what fans dislike the most about her. While some viewers can’t stand her at all, others like her but have gripes about certain aspects of her personality, abilities, and character design.
Nami can be great at times—she often adds hilarious moments and provides much-needed support to Luffy and the other Straw Hat pirates. However, she has many flaws as a character and often falls into common shonen anime tropes. This is not her fault of course, as it really stems from poor character design decisions.
10 Her Character Development Stops After Arlong Park
During the Arlong Park Arc, Nami steals the Going Merry and brings it to her hometown, Cocoyasi Village. As it turns out, Nami is a member of the Arlong pirates, but only so that she can buy her village from Arlong, the villain who terrorizes it. When Luffy and the Straw Hats go after her, Nami is touched that they stand up for her despite her betrayal. She asks Luffy for help, which is a huge turning point for her.
After the Straw Hats defeat the Arlong pirates and Nami joins the crew, her character development stagnates. Even when she appears in major scenes or has fight sequences, she never really grows as much as she did during the Arlong Park Arc. In contrast, other members of the crew such as Zoro and Sanji undergo major growth in arcs other than their introductory ones.
9 She Rarely Plays An Important Role
Nami is the navigator of the crew, and she is exceptional at her job. However, she rarely plays an important role in the plot of One Piece. Compared to other members of the crew, Nami often feels reduced to a background character.
Nami has a good amount of screen time but her appearances all-too-often consist of fanservice moments, especially in more recent arcs. While not the strongest fighter, she is cunning and knows how to use others to her advantage. The show has missed many opportunities to utilize Nami’s skills to help the crew achieve their goals.
8 Her Character Design Is Over-Sexualized
Nami’s character design is over-sexualized. Post-time skip, she returns to the crew with a significantly larger chest and thinner waist. Her physically impossible proportions can create harmful expectations for viewers of all genders and ages—especially as One Piece is a show aimed at pre-teens and teenagers.
Some might argue that the show sexualizes its male characters just as much. For example, Zoro has super exaggerated muscles and is not afraid to show them off. The difference is that his body design serves a practical purpose—his muscular body aids him in fights. Nami’s extreme design only serves to gratify viewers.
7 She Becomes All Fan-Service In Later Arcs
After the events at Marineford, the Straw Hats take two years to train separately and grow stronger. However, the most noticeable difference between pre and post-time skip Nami is her body. This so-called upgrade does not make Nami stronger in any way. In fact, the ridiculous size of her chest would realistically hinder her movements and get in the way of any sort of physical activity.
Since the time skip, Nami’s fan service moments have occurred more and more often. Before the time skip, she often used her appearance to her advantage as she was aware of the effect she has on men. Post-time skip Nami is just fan service for the sake of fan service.
6 Her Clothing Design Is Impractical
While there is nothing wrong with a person dressing to show off their body, Nami’s outfit designs often reach an extreme. For Nami being someone who travels the world as a member of a pirate crew, the show does not dress her for the job. She wears outfits meant to please viewers instead of clothing that would actually be practical.
In terms of footwear, she often wears heeled shoes or sandals, which must be incredibly difficult to walk or run in, let alone fight in. For example, during the Alabasta Arc, Nami wears heeled sandals even though they are a super impractical choice for desert terrain. She continues to fight Miss Doublefinger, who also wears heels, and miraculously manages to run around and not break an ankle.
5 Her Fighting Abilities Are Lackluster
Compared to the fighting abilities of Luffy, Zoro, Robin and other characters, Nami’s abilities are underwhelming for much of the show. It is not until during the Alabasta Arc that Nami receives her signature Clima-Tact weapon. Up until then, she fought mainly with a staff. With just the staff, her fighting was not as interesting to watch and she was one of the weakest characters.
It was a long time before the Clima-Tact, which allows its user some control over the weather, became a strong enough tool to serve Nami well in battle. Still, many fans consider Nami’s abilities to be boring in comparison to the colorful variety of Devil Fruit powers and other combat skills.
4 She Often Falls Into Negative Stereotypes
While Nami has many positive traits, she often orders others around, a trait that many viewers find to be annoying. She constantly tells other members of the crew what to do, including Luffy even though he is the captain.
Nami falls into the “bossy woman” stereotype. Unfortunately, One Piece portrays Nami’s behavior in a negative way—she is “bossy” rather than assertive or confident. The series relies on this stereotype for Nami, and as a result, many One Piece fans dislike her.
3 She Is Often Manipulative Of Her Friends
Nami is well-aware of her attractiveness and uses it to manipulate men into doing her bidding. Her ability to weaponize her appearance and use male characters’ pervertedness against them is one of Nami’s best traits. However, she sometimes manipulates characters who are supposed to be her friends. In particular, her treatment of Sanji can go too far.
Sanji has been in love with Nami since the moment they first met. Knowing this, Nami takes advantage of his feelings to control him. There are numerous instances of Sanji being pervy or hitting on her and Nami responding with either violence or manipulation. Many fans agree that while funny at times, this dynamic is overdone.
2 She Constantly Physically Abuses Her Friends
A running gag in the series is Nami’s violence towards the male members of the crew. For a show that focuses so much on combat abilities, many fans question how Nami, who is considered one of the weaker characters, can do so much damage to strong characters such as Luffy, Zoro and Sanji.
Nami’s abuse of her friends is concerning. It is a shonen anime trope for a female character to beat up a male character for comedic effect. While the damage the female character inflicts may seem extreme, the male character usually recovers a moment later once the joke is over. This trope is distasteful and normalizes violence. As the crew claims they are family, this abuse could be considered domestic violence. Treating it as a joke is not only harmful to real-life survivors of abuse but also implies that this type of behavior is not to be taken seriously.
1 Her Love For Money Defines Her Personality
One trait defines Nami as a character above all others: her love for money. While she has many other traits, including her confidence in her sexuality and her inclination to use violence (especially with Luffy, Sanji and Zoro), her love of money can overshadow everything else. Some viewers find Nami to be a shallow character.
Nami will do anything for money. She has been known to steal, plunder, and gush over gold and other treasure. Given her history with the Arlong pirates, her predilection for securing and saving money makes sense. However, her greediness can reach extreme levels and sometimes harms her friends. She charges other members of the crew insanely high-interest rates and uses their debts to manipulate them into doing things for her. This sometimes makes her a toxic character.
