WWE’s Big E Posts Encouraging Message Following Scary Neck Injury

WWE superstar Big E (real name Ettore Ewen) assures fans he’s going to be okay after suffering a legitimate broken neck on tonight’s episode of SmackDown.

Big E and fellow New Day member Kofi Kingston were booked to compete in a tag team match against Sheamus and Ridge Holland. During the match, Big E and Holland were brawling on the floor outside the ring, near the commentary desk. Holland hit Big E with a belly-to-belly suplex. However, Big E did not fully rotate and landed directly on his head, seemingly injuring his neck and causing great concern among viewers. Footage taken by fans in attendance shows Big E giving a thumbs-up while being stretchered to the back in a neck brace.

Big E himself subsequently posted a video to Twitter, thanking the fans for their support and revealing the nature of his injury. “I can’t thank all of you beautiful people enough for all of your concern and your messages. It’s very heartwarming,” the former WWE Champion said. “I can move all my digits… that’s always a good thing. Strength feels fine. But, unfortunately, right now, they tell me my neck is broken. So, there’s that. But, once again, thank you, everybody. I’mma be all right. I’ll be good. Don’t worry. Go to sleep. Don’t worry about ol’ me. But, for real, thank you. And I appreciate all of you, for real.”

A native of Tampa, Florida, Ewen made his professional wrestling debut in 2009 for Florida Championship Wrestling (FCW) — a WWE developmental territory — under the name Big E Langston. FCW was rebranded as NXT in 2012. Langston ultimately defeated Seth Rollins to become the second-ever NXT Champion, holding the title for a recognized 153 days before dropping it to Bo Dallas. Langston made his WWE main-roster debut in December 2012. His ring name was later shortened to simply Big E in 2014.

As a member of WWE’s main roster, Big E is a two-time Intercontinental Champion, a two-time WWE/Raw Tag Team Champion as a member of The New Day, a six-time SmackDown Tag Team Champion as a member of The New Day and, of course, a one-time WWE Champion. He holds the distinction of being fourth Black man in history to win the WWE Championship, following Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Kingston and Bobby Lashley. Additionally, The New Day (Big E, Kingston and Xavier Woods) hold the record as the longest-reigning tag team champions in WWE history, having broken the record previously held by Demolition.
