WARNING: The following contains spoilers for No Exit, now streaming on Hulu.
Hulu’s new thriller, No Exit, was a chaotic ride for Darby (Havana Rose Liu) as she tried to get to Salt Lake City to see her dying mother. Unfortunately, she had to take shelter at a cabin due to a snowstorm, only to realize a couple of guys staying there, Ash and Lars, kidnapped a young girl, Jay. The action-horror then took an even darker turn when it was revealed Sandi, an older woman also seeking shelter with her husband, Ed, wasn’t just another suspect but the mastermind. It led to a brutal finale that saw Ash killing the couple and pursuing Darby and Jay so he could get the $2 million ransom. However, thanks to his rage and unyielding ego, Ash committed the genre’s dumbest mistake, undoing his entire plan in the process.
Darby and Jay faced off against the men, but things looked optimistic when Jay struck Ash, getting him to accidentally shoot Lars in the head with a nail gun. Lars slipped and fell, sinking the nail into his brain and dying, which left Ash irate. As such, when the ladies were trying to escape in Darby’s car, Ash shot it, causing them to crash. Luckily, Darby had Lars’ gun and shot Ash, but she then got shot herself when a cop, Ron, arrived on the scene.
Ash then saw an opportunity and tried to shoot Ron with Lars’ gun, only to realize it had no bullets. With no other options, he grabbed the nail gun once again, murdered Ron without flinching and, when the nails ran out, took Ron’s gun and headed over to Darby. But this is when Ash went from being a cerebral villain to a clueless killer that needed to look his would-be victim in the eyes.
He straddled Darby, taunting her as she bled out and basking in the glow of letting Darby know her sister texted and that her mom died. However, Ash didn’t need to get that close. He could have shot her dead from a few feet away, but by getting creepy up close and personal, he allowed Darby to secretly grab a screwdriver and stab him in the neck.
Now, Ash was the one bleeding out, but while it was meant to be a cathartic moment, it came off as comical. And what made things worse was that he knew how shifty Darby was because she escaped his grasp multiple times throughout the film. At one point, he even admitted to Lars they needed to be smarter. Obviously, he didn’t take his own advice, and it left him on the wrong end of a kill.
See how Ash makes an amateur mistake in No Exit, now streaming on Hulu.
