WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for The Batman, in theaters now.
The Batman cinematographer Greig Fraser has revealed why the film kept Barry Keoghan’s surprise character shrouded in darkness.
While speaking to The Wrap, Fraser was asked about the film’s final scene, specifically the choice to leave Keoghan’s iteration of the Clown Prince of Crime largely in the shadows. The acclaimed cinematographer, who is also behind Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and Dune, said, “I can’t comment on who it is, but this Gotham is a bubbling cesspool of crime, isn’t it?”
Fraser continued, “So giving a little kiss or an introduction of who else may be living in this prison. I mean, what a fantastic opportunity to do that. And again, going back to the adage of you don’t want to see too much. You never want to see too much. Sometimes seeing too much can distract from some of the beauty or joy of watching films.”
The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the titular hero, has had rumors surrounding Keoghan’s involvement in the film ever since he was confirmed to be a part of it. With the release of the film, speculation that Keoghan would portray The Joker have been all but confirmed. The scene in question sees The Riddler, played by Paul Dano, locked up in Arkham Asylum. Keoghan, credited in the film as Unseen Arkham Prisoner, promises The Riddler that they will become friends, before saying there are worse things to be than a clown.
The scene ends with Keoghan’s character letting out a maniacal, unmistakably Joker-esque laugh, further confirming audiences’ suspicions. Because The Batman has only recently been released, it is no surprise that Fraser hasn’t outright named Keoghan’s character as The Joker. Fans can likely look forward to Keoghan’s role being discussed in more certain terms, as Matt Reeves has previously spoken about deleted scenes that he expects to be released and revisited sometime after The Batman‘s theatrical run.
Coupled with the promises of Matt Reeves’ Batman universe being explored further through HBO Max, Keoghan’s introduction on the silver screen implies that he will become a central figure in the series going forward. Fans can see all of the dimly lit action of The Batman for themselves in theaters now.
