The Amazing Spider-Man comics have always had an amazing and diverse collection of villains encompassing all walks of life. Some villains like Doc Ock are motivated by power, while others desire fame or revenge against Spider-Man. But of all of these enemies, only one villain exists because of his profession — Kraven the Hunter. With his first live-action film coming soon, it’s hard not to wonder if he will be hunting Spider-Man or a new enemy. But whoever he sets his sights on, it’s clear that Sony’s Spider-Man films have been setting up his hunt for years.
Kraven the Hunter is a man who loves nothing more than a fair and respectful hunt between him and his prey. After hunting every deadly creature on Earth, he set his sights on Spider-Man as a prize worthy of his attention. The more Spidey evaded and defeated the hunter, the more introspective he became as a character, which eventually led to him questioning his place in the animal kingdom. But with his first big hunt coming, it’s easy to see the bread crumbs being left for the Hunter to follow.

Kraven’s first film will likely be an origin for why he becomes such a famed hunter and how he is motivated to hunt more superpowered individuals. But after he defeats the film’s main foe, he will have to look to new heights to appease his desire for a true challenge. Thankfully, characters like Venom exist who have shown time and again just how hard it is to kill a symbiote. There’s also the new addition of Morbius, who appears to be the most animalistic enemy in this new universe yet. Since no Spider-Man has officially been established in Sony’s blossoming Spider-Man universe, it’s hard to say if and how the multiverse will play a role. But until then, Kraven likely has a fair selection of villains with which he can hone his craft.
Morbius is intelligent but prone to losing himself to the hunger at any moment. Because of this, he can help Kraven master his reflexes to prepare for anything coming his way. On the other hand, Venom is far more intelligent and crafty when he’s at his strongest, meaning Kraven will have to outsmart this foe as well. There’s also the addition of the Vulture and perhaps even the Lizard, who could test the hunter in the skies or the sewers. While he eventually teams up with the enemies in the comics, his first stint in America would more so be him finding his place and establishing dominance before chasing the biggest game of all — Spider-Man.

Kraven is an intelligent enemy who can think five steps ahead of his prey. Since Sony has established and fleshed out so many strong characters in that time, it makes his desire to hunt them all the more plausible. Also, should he defeat them one by one, audiences will see that he is a force to be reckoned with. Therefore, by the time he faces off with any of the multiverse’s web-slingers, Peter Parker will have to push himself to stop a man capable of defeating Morbius, Venom and possibly more.
Sony’s big picture with its Spider-Man films is still being revealed piece by piece. But as more hints are given, larger questions are raised. Plus, with the confirmation of a multiverse of Spider-Man, now fans will have to speculate which web-slinger Kraven could square off with. But when looking back on its past films, Sony has clearly set up a collection of rogues that could easily test Kraven. But with all of this game lying in wait for the hunter, their inevitable defeats will only mean Spider-Man will be forced to face a threat that, unlike other enemies, is prepared for him.
