Elden Ring: Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon Boss Guide | CBR

Throughout Elden Ring, players will encounter a variety of unique enemies. As an open-world game, it has plenty of optional battles, but the bosses of the main campaign can be extra tricky to defeat. Players will find these bosses within Legacy Dungeons throughout the Lands Between. One of these is a Demigod named Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon.

Rennala is the second Legacy Dungeon Boss, located in the Grand Library of Raya Lucaria. She provides a multi-stage boss fight with changing attacks and locations, so like many other foes in the game, she can be tough to strategize against and beat. There are also some random elements left to chance, like Rennala’s ability to summon a variety of enemies to help her and how their locations can change. Despite this, she does have set patterns, and once players learn them, her fight is relatively straightforward with a set strategy for each phase.

Breaking Down The Fight Against Rennala

Rennala floats down, holding a golden egg.

Rennala’s fight has two phases. The first has her hovering in a shield while several students cast spells and throw books at you. In order to break Rennala’s protective orb, players have to find and defeat three students who are glowing yellow. After doing this, Renalla falls down, allowing the player to get a few hits in before doing an area-of-effect explosion attack, regaining her shield and repeating the process around three more times. Chandeliers can fall during this phase, and Rennala herself will also throw debris. The player needs to dodge these to avoid taking damage.

Her second phase transports her and the player to a plane of water. Rennala first casts a large energy beam that the player can dodge. Her other attacks include throwing crystals and icy spears, with the utilization of homing crystals as her capper. The player can dodge all of these attacks and will have to sprint from the last after doing so. Rennala also has the ability to summon support to help her in her fight. These can include a Giant, Bloodhound Knight Darriwil, wolves or a dragon. These enemies will attack a few times and then dissipate.

Strategies For Defeating Rennala

Sweetings from Elden Ring look up from the floor

Rennala takes reduced damage from magic, making melee classes like the Vagabond a good choice. Even playing as a Mage, it’s best to use melee weapons. Bows are viable as they also do physical damage but being close to her helps to dodge some of her attacks in the second phase of the fight. She’s weak to bleeding, so weapons like the Hookclaws are great in this situation.

In her first phase, at least one student tends to spawn in a corner, so it’s best to look there first. The player can follow the direction that the thrown books are coming from if they’re having trouble finding the students they need to defeat. The room also has several walls to hide behind, so the player can stay behind them while searching for students and avoiding attacks. It’s not worth fighting off the students as they’re relatively easy to dodge, but they can do a significant amount of damage if allowed to continuously strike the player.

In the second phase, the gamer should largely avoid attacking Rennala’s summoned enemies. They’ll disappear on their own regardless of whether they’re actually beaten, so fighting them is a waste of time. Instead, the player should focus on dodging their attacks and moving closer to Rennala in order to do some damage. Getting up close to Renalla is one way to avoid her initial beam, and also allows the gamer to get some extra hits in at the risk of being struck by her projectiles. Like in Margit the Fell Omen’s boss fight, mastering the timing of Rennala’s attacks is essential.

What You Get For Defeating Rennala

After defeating Rennala, the player can respec their character, meaning they can change their looks, reset attributes and reassign stats. This can be done for the cost of one Larval Tear, which can be found in a variety of places, one of which is the Village of the Albanaurics. They also gets the Remembrance of the Full Moon Queen, which can be traded to Enia in the Roundtable Hold for Rennala’s Full Moon, a Sorcery, or the Carlan Regal Scepter, a staff.

Beating Rennala also gives the player access to her treasure chest, though it will remain locked until the Ranni the Witch and Three Sisters questline is completed. This not only grants access to the chest but leads to the discovery of several other secrets. The player can access this quest by clearing out Caria Manor.
