Euphoria Is Second to Game of Thrones as HBO’s Most-Watched Series

Viewership figures released by HBO confirm that Euphoria is officially the pay TV network’s second most-watched show since 2004, with only Game of Thrones performing better.

HBO revealed that Euphoria episodes have averaged 16.3 million viewers across the teen drama’s second season, via data shared with Variety. By contrast, the epic fantasy series Game of Thrones racked up 46 million viewers per episode on average during its final season, highlighting how far Euphoria has to go to secure the top spot.

Media research company Nielsen changed how it measured HBO viewership figures in 2004, which explains why the new most-watched rankings only date back that far instead of covering the network’s full 49-year history. It’s also noted that the various HBO streaming services launched since 2004 (including HBO Go, HBO Now and HBO Max) made calculating even these less comprehensive statistics tricky.

Euphoria nabbing the title of HBO’s second most-watched series comes after Twitter recognized it as the most-tweeted-about show of the decade. The social media platform confirmed that Euphoria was the most-discussed series by its American userbase, with Season 2 generating over 30 million tweets alone. Twitter further announced that three Euphoria Season 2 episodes — “Stand Still Like the Hummingbird,” “A Thousand Little Trees of Blood” and “The Theater and Its Double” — were the show’s most-tweeted-about episodes ever.

HBO confirmed in February 2022 that Euphoria will return for a third season, with showrunner Sam Levinson and star/executive producer Zendaya both onboard to return. The series’ viewership figures for Season 2 increased by almost 100% from Season 1, a success story HBO will be looking to continue with the third season. Little is known about the direction Levinson has planned for Euphoria Season 3, but some online commentators are hoping that it will set up a happy ending for Zendaya’s Rue.

HBO is also hoping to repeat the Game of Thrones property’s stellar performance once more, with a new spinoff series House of the Dragon set to premiere later this year. Taking place 200 years before the original series, House of the Dragon will depict the legendary “Dance of the Dragons” civil war only hinted at in its predecessor. Cast member Ryan Corr recently teased the Game of Thrones spinoff’s massive scale, while HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys has assured fans that a release date for the series will be announced soon.

Euphoria Seasons 1 and 2 are now streaming on HBO Max. Season 3 does not yet have a release date.
