WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Episodes 1-9 of The Legend of Vox Machina, streaming now on Prime Video.
Every episode of The Legend of Vox Machina has done a terrific job at upping the ante and placing the team of adventurers in new perilous situations. There’s no better example of this than the episode, “The Tide of Bone,” where the gang had to fight a horde of undead brought to life by Lady Briarwood’s spell. Sadly, without the help of their most powerful member, Pike, things didn’t go too well for the anti-heroes in this episode. That is until Pike miraculously showed up and saved the day.
In the final minutes of the episode, Vox Machina found themselves backed up against the Sun Tree with a slew of zombies pushing closer. During this moment, many fans’ minds went back to Wakanda and the final battle of Avengers: Infinity War. As Thanos’ army and the Black Order were closing in, things looked grim for the Avengers. That was until Thor Odinson used his newly minted Stormbreaker to sky beam onto the stage. A similar deus ex machina happened for Vox Machina when Pike returned to save her friends. While she didn’t get to scream, “Bring me Thanos,” Pike did make a similarly awesome appearance.
Leading up to her grand entrance, Pike had spent the last several episodes apart from the group. After having lost her connection with the Everlight, the source of her cleric powers, Pike decided to split from her friends and take a moment for self-reflection. From that point on, her story has acted as a strong B-plot for the series as the narrative would periodically cut back to Pike attempting to reconnect with Everlight.
In episode 8, “Silver Tongue,” Pike’s fellow Everlight clerics had given up on her ability to reconnect with the goddess of healing and redemption. Thankfully, Pike held on and continued her meditations, trying desperately to revive that connection with her deity. After being put through the wringer while coming to terms with the darkness inside of her, Everlight appeared and grilled Pike on her intentions. The gnome had felt she abandoned her religious commitments by joining Vox Machina and partaking in their misadventures. However, Everlight reminds her that righteous people have a right to represent her faith wherever their journey takes them.
The coolest thing about Pike’s deus ex machina is that she wasn’t even in Whitestone when she saved her friends and the town. Pike didn’t only astrally project herself across territories but interacted with the physical environment, produced energy blasts and instilled the power of Everlight into the rebels’ weapon. So, this begs the question, is Pike as powerful as the God of Thunder?
While Thor has several feet on Pike, she has a slew of abilities that Thor doesn’t have, like the ability to produce forcefields and heal severe injuries. When Pike is with the group in person, she will usually use a physical weapon, like a sword or shield, to fight alongside her friends. During this battle though, Pike manifested a mace made of pure energy, which she tossed around like Thor throwing Mjölnir or Stormbreaker. The combination of all these abilities, weapons and newfound connection with the Everlight ensures that Pike would be able to hold her own with Thor. That being said, the two would most likely rather share several pints of ale together than throw fists.
