Like any anime, Attack On Titan has its fair share of likable characters that the audience initially loves. As time goes on, fans can grow to hate them. Likable characters such as Eren and Mikasa are easy to cheer on at the beginning of Attack On Titan, as they go through numerous struggles and develop as characters.
However, some of these developments do not give fans their preferred outcomes. Thanks to the world these characters live in, everyone has their flaws. Even the most beloved characters in Attack On Titan commit unforgivable actions or develop annoying habits that begin to bother fans. Ultimately, those who start as fan-favorites can end up as the most hated characters.
10 Yelena Regresses As A Character
When first introduced to Attack On Titan, Yelena had the potential to be a unique character. She quickly captivated the audience’s attention as a Marlyan who wished to help Eldians. She initially appeared to be siding with the heroes as she went on to share technology and resources with them, but her true character slowly came to the forefront.
In reality, Yelena’s actions are a ploy to get Eren closer to Zeke for her own selfish motives. Yelena’s character revolves around Zeke exclusively, and every action she makes is with him in mind. Yelena often doesn’t feel like her own character but seems more like Zeke’s puppet. Over time, Yelena begins to feel unoriginal.
9 Bertholdt Stays A Coward
Bertholdt was considered to be an ally at the start of Attack On Titan. Berthholdt’s character revolved around a lack of confidence. Because he considered himself weak, he became a hero worth rooting for. Fans waited patiently for him to show some character development.
Bertholdt was ranked 3rd in his class when he joined the Scout Regiment, so he was obviously capable. Instead of breaking through his fears, his character remained stagnant. Fans began to dislike him, and that dislike only grew when he betrayed the Scouts and did very little with the power of the Colossal Titan.
8 Conny Does Nothing To Earn Fan Respect
Conny didn’t do anything to stand out or gain fan interest during his time in Attack On Titan. Only occasionally did Conny show some personality and have emotional interactions with the main characters, which gave fans hope that his role would increase.
Unfortunately, Conny never reached that point and he did nothing more than exist. By no means is Conny the worst character in Attack On Titan, but many fans dislike him since he didn’t significantly impact any season or episode. Conny’s screen time could have been better used on more interesting characters, making him even more frustrating to think about.
7 Reiner Loses His Will To Fight
Reiner began Attack On Titan as a protagonist and unlike Bertholdt, he showed strong and confident characteristics. He was never afraid to fight for what he believed in. To make him even more likable, he was someone Eren looked up to.
However, Reiner’s likability quickly faded when Attack On Titan revealed he was a spy. Not only did he expose Eren to negative emotions and hatred, but he participated in the attack of Shiganshina. Reiner also showed hesitance to fight during the final season, which contradicted his character’s strong beliefs. As Attack On Titan continued, Reiner became more of a disappointment.
6 Mikasa Lets Her Feelings For Eren Get In The Way
Mikasa’s character regression is incredibly disappointing. She was a fan favorite for most of Attack On Titan, and her ruthlessness made her a standout personality. However, Mikasa starts showing an inevitable increase in vulnerability. In particular, Attack On Titan’s last season showed less of the strength that fans had grown accustomed to.
Miksa doubted herself more, especially after Eren convinced her that she was born strictly to protect him. Her obsession with Eren became similar to Yelena’s obsession with Zeke. As a result, Mikasa wasted her potential, which makes it harder to like her character in the present.
5 Annie’s Development Comes Too Late
From the start, Annie seemed cold and distant. She did as she pleased and proved herself on multiple occasions, which made her a strong candidate to be a mainstay character who grew on the audience. She and Mikasa constantly showed that they are just as capable as the other male characters.
Annie needed some character development, even if only to warm up to the protagonists. Unfortunately, that day came too late in Attack On Titan. She became even more disliked when it was revealed that she was an enemy spy who would give the main heroes trouble on multiple occasions.
4 Ymir Betrays The Heroes Despite Her Relationship With Historia
Ymir was a strong character whose personality initially resonated with the audience. She got along with the protagonists well and seemed to fit in perfectly. Her relationship with Historia is one that fans have always enjoyed and the two are ‘shipped’ quite often.
Ymir’s relationship with the protagonists and her likability made her betrayal a massive disappointment. It was incredibly frustrating for fans when she saved Historia against orders, only to go back to the enemy. The building blocks were in place for Ymir to develop as a character by leaving behind her old life in favor of one with Historia and the protagonists. A major opportunity was wasted with her character.
3 Armin Lost His Non-Violent Ways
Armin stood out for most of Attack On Titan as someone who refused to harm others. He tried his best to come up with peaceful solutions and only used violence as a last resort. While Armin often lacked self-confidence, he was a master strategist who fans grew to appreciate. He had a unique way of handling and thinking things through which allowed him to stand out.
However, Armin changes in Attack On Titan’s final season. He obeyed Eren’s wishes by killing hundreds of people as the Colossal Titan, which contradicts his character and non-violent nature. His character always revolved too much around Eren rather than developing as a unique individual.
2 Zeke Becomes Self-Centered
Initially, Zeke was a mysterious character. His impact on Attack On Titan was huge, despite frequently keeping his distance. His intelligence and strength as the Beast Titan made fans want to see more of him, and his plot to bring Eren to his side was fascinating.
Zeke’s issues come when his true motives are revealed. Being fixated on eliminating an entire civilization made his character harder to like. The power of the Founding Titan is limitless and a non-violent solution to end the Titan problem was likely on the table, but he refused to consider it. He showed just how self-centered he was after turning numerous people into Titans for his own ambitions.
1 Eren Becomes The Villain
As an underdog and the main protagonist of Attack On Titan, fans were naturally drawn towards Eren. He had to grow and mature quickly, and his journey to master his powers and achieve peace was admirable. Eren showed character development in every season, making him a likable protagonist.
Eren shocked everyone by becoming the main villain of the final season. His character switched, and he caused plenty of trouble for the heroes. Eren even seemed like he didn’t care about his relationship with Mikasa or Armin. Every season before the time skip, Eren would be upset and complain. It took until the final season for him to grow out of this habit, which seemed very childish for someone so powerful.
