Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2 ends just as an epic showdown between Andrew Garfield’s titular superhero and Paul Giamatti’s villainous Rhino begins, but ever since the film’s debut in 2014, fans have been left in the dark about how the battle unfolds. Garfield finally addressed the cliffhanger — but probably not in the way people wanted.
“If I remember correctly, what happened after that, was not suitable… because it was so brutal … I have no idea,” the actor stated during his recent appearance on On Air With Ryan Seacrest. “That’s where the script ended, and that’s where our movie ended. So you get to choose your own adventure with that one. What would you have liked to have seen happen?”
It seems unlikely that fans will ever get a definitive answer on how that particular battle between Spider-Man and Rhino unfolded, as the film series’ third entry was effectively canceled after the 2015 deal between Sony and Marvel Studio allowed the superhero to appear in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite some recent renewed fan interest in a third Amazing Spider-Man movie starring Garfield, there hasn’t been any official word about such a project going forward.
However, Garfield’s Spider-Man did receive some closure in terms of his character arc through his appearance in the MCU’s latest feature film, Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the movie, he battled a myriad of villains alongside Tom Holland’s and Tobey Maguire’s versions of Spider-Man.
Spider-Man: No Way Home premiered in theaters at the end of 2021 and has already become one of the MCU’s most profitable and popular entries. The film dethroned James Cameron’s science fiction epic Avatar to become the third-biggest movie ever at the domestic box office. Victoria Alonso, president of physical, post-production, VFX and animation at Marvel Studios, took to social media to celebrate the ongoing success, posting, “I’m immensely proud of the Spider-Man: No Way Home team and forever grateful to the audience for the love and support.”
Moreover, Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently the highest-selling preorder title on Vudu, the Fandango-owned streaming service. “No Way Home is one of the biggest superhero movies ever made, and a historic event for film fans, which makes it the perfect movie to add to your home collection,” Fandango’s managing editor Erik Davis explained. “It’s no surprise that it’s Vudu’s hottest pre-order title of all time.”
The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, and Spider-Man: No Way Home will release digitally on March 22.
