FromSoftware’s first open-world Soulsborne Elden Ring contains a memorial dedicated to the late Berserk author Kentaro Miura.
Players traversing Elden Ring‘s world of The Lands Between stumbled upon a monument bearing a striking resemblance to the weapon of Guts, the wandering protagonist of Miura’s Berserk. The central marker is surrounded by smaller swords, which fans believe might be intended as markers for the lost members of the Band of the Hawk.
Miura was only 54 when he shockingly passed away from an acute aortic dissection on May 6, 2021, leaving his beloved dark fantasy epic Berserk unfinished at 41 volumes. Though his funeral was a private ceremony held by his family, thousands more commemorated his life with personal tributes to the author. His long career in the manga industry was celebrated with the “Large Berserk Exhibition – Kentaro Miura’s 32 Years Of Painting,” a museum exhibition displaying 300 original pieces and manuscripts from the master mangaka. Miura’s final completed Berserk chapter was also packaged with a booklet entitled “Messages to Miura,” which contained letters from fans and manga authors inspired by his work.
The late author continues to live on in the works of others, including Elden Ring‘s director Hidetaka Miyazaki. Miyazaki’s love for all things fantasy is well-documented thanks to previous interviews. Apart from the monument, the Greatsword in Elden Ring seemingly acts as another way for Miyazaki to honor one of his inspirations, as the weapon features a bulky redesign similar to Guts’ iconic Dragon Slayer. FromSoftware’s Dark Souls 3, for which Miyazaki also served as director, even allowed players to collect armor pieces resembling the outfits worn by Guts in the manga.
Elden Ring is the latest entry into FromSoftware’s merciless Soulsborne games, featuring a new open-world for players to explore and conquer in their journey to restore the titular Elden Ring. The game’s launch was met with universal critical acclaim, with reviews lauding its storytelling, expansive worldbuilding and challenging gameplay. Elden Ring isn’t entirely devoid of shortcomings though, as many players are leaving negative Steam reviews due to the technical problems plaguing the PC version. Publisher Bandai Namco released an official statement apologizing for the inconvenience, along with a promise to fix the game’s issues in the near future.
Written and illustrated by Miura, Berserk followed the lone mercenary Guts, a one-eyed, one-armed warrior who uses his massive sword and arsenal of weaponry to slay demons in a medieval fantasy world. Elden Ring is available for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC.
