The Avengers are known as Earth’s mightiest heroes, and that appellation is self-explanatory. The team combines Marvel’s greatest heroes into one powerful unit, an assemblage of heroes that faces down the deadliest threats the Marvel Universe can throw at them. The team has proven to be one of the most potent groups in all of comics, boasting legendary heroes and battling in titanic wars for the fate of all reality.
Every comic team is different and each does things better than others. The Avengers have been around a long time and they’ve proven to be very unique, doing many things better than any other hero group.
10 They Work With The Government And SHIELD
One of the hallmarks of most superhero teams is their independence. They are heroes but they don’t work for any central authority. The Avengers have always been different, and for good reason. Iron Man and his companies are some of the most powerful in the US military-industrial complex and Captain America wears the flag; the government and the Avengers are inextricably linked.
From having liasions with the US government to working with SHIELD, the Avengers have proven to be as much an arm of the governmental powers that be as anything else. Sometimes, this has helped them and other times it’s hindered them.
9 They’ve Been Able To Work With Gods Better Than Other Teams
One of the things that set the Avengers apart from nearly every other superteam in existence is Thor. They are the only team with a founding member who is an actual god and Thor’s good relationship with his family on Asgard has seen the Avengers come to their aid many times over the years, helping them battle Loki and other threats.
With most other teams, they’re usually fighting the gods or have ambivalent at best relationships with them. The Avengers stand with them and fight side by their side, proving that mortals can help the gods at times.
8 Membership In The Avengers Is A Surefire Path To Stardom
While the Avengers began as basically a Justice Society/Justice League rip-off – a team of the greatest heroes of a publisher- that changed over the years. Eventually, B-list heroes would join the team and actually become big deals in the Marvel Universe in a way that rarely if ever happened with other teams.
Being an Avengers has been a path to stardom for characters in the Marvel Universe in a way that’s not really replicated on any other team. Characters with little to no name recognition have joined the Avengers and rose to the heights of the Marvel Universe and pop culture in a way that other groups just can’t replicate.
7 They Police The Other Heroes
The Avengers and the Justice League have a lot of similarities. They are the pinnacle of their respective superhero communities and contain the greatest heroes in their universes. There are some differences, though, and one of them is in the way the Avengers deal with the rest of their heroic community. Marvel heroes are a more contentious lot and that means the Avengers often have to police the heroes.
The Avengers have found themselves in positions where they’ve had to act as an authority figure to other groups, telling them what to do and how to comport themselves in a way few other groups have to, with it often coming to blows.
6 They Let Scarlet Witch Off The Hook Better Than Anyone Else
Scarlet Witch has had a difficult life, and that’s often manifested as her lashing out. On these occasions, she’s been known to do some terrible things, attacking her friends, occasionally killing them, and changing reality when it suits her whim. However, no matter how badly her actions affect the Avengers and the rest of the world, the team basically does nothing about it.
They don’t try to punish her, but they also don’t try to get her help either. They forgive her for everything she does and protect her from the consequences of her actions. Scarlet Witch has done worse things than some villains and yet the Avengers will go to any lengths to let her off the hook.
5 They Reform Villains Better Than Anyone
Villains joining superhero teams is a tried and true trope, and it’s one that Avengers started. The team has been a trendsetter in a lot of ways and the introduction of Cap’s Kooky Quartet in Avengers (1963) #16 was the first time villains- Hawkeye, Scarlet Witch, and Quicksilver- joined the team and actually reformed.
The Avengers are better at this than anyone. Most of the time, a villain joins a team and it’s all part of a ploy or they stay with the team until a roster shakeup and then go back to being a villain. The Avengers have succeeded at reforming more villains than any other superteam, which is quite an accomplishment.
4 They Have The Best Leaders
The X-Men have Cyclops. The Justice League has Superman. The Teen Titans have the various Robins who have joined the team. These are all great leaders but they can’t hold a candle to the leaders of the Avengers over the years. Captain America is one of the greatest leaders ever and as if that’s not enough, Black Panther is also an Avenger.
Add to that number heroes like the Wasp, Hawkeye, and Captain Marvel, and the Avengers have more heroes that can step up and take command at the highest level than any other team out there. No other team can compete with their leadership cadre.
3 They’re The Best At Battling Kang
Kang is one of the most dangerous villains across time, bedeviling the heroes in multiple guises. While he’s battled groups like the Fantastic Four and the Inhumans, his greatest foes are the Avengers and they’ve been able to stop his most sinister plans better than anyone. Part of that is experience, as they’ve dealt with him the most, but the other part is just how good they are.
Kang is a grave threat to the entire timestream and the Avengers know how to deal with him in ways no one else does. Even with his knowledge of future events and years of collecting weapons to use against them, he still can’t win.
2 They’re The Only Team That’s Proven Capable Of Effectively Stopping Ultron
Ultron is one of the gravest threats in the Marvel Universe. Created by Avenger Hank Pym, Ultron has tried to destroy humanity multiple times. While he’s battled other groups of heroes, the only team that’s really had much success against him is the Avengers. A big reason for that is because of how many genius heroes are on the team and the fact his creator is an Avenger.
The few other teams that have fought Ultron tried to beat him into submission but the Avengers go further, trying to ensure he can’t just shunt himself into a new body. This makes them much more effective against him.
1 They Are A Superhero Melting Pot
The heroes of Marvel and DC have a lot of differences as communities and the biggest difference is how stratified the heroes of Marvel are compared to DC. In the DC Universe, the heroic community is friendlier with no division. Marvel is completely different, as mutants, Eternals, and Inhumans all pretty much stay to themselves and aren’t exactly the best of friends.
Except in the Avengers, that is. The many rosters of the team have brought together heroes from every group and melded them into one force. With the contentiousness of the various Marvel groups, this is a major achievement, one that sets the Avengers apart from everyone else.
