Hotel Transylvania contains four films created by Sony Pictures Animation. The films primarily follow Dracula, the owner of a hotel for monsters. In these films, he struggles to accept humanity and struggles to keep the family together.
The films are meant to show audiences that although monsters and humans have vast cultural and physical differences, they are not as different as they initially expect. The diverse cast is filled with characters with positive and negative characteristics. While some characters are shining examples of how people should behave, others are chaotic and display behaviors that no one should ever replicate.
10 Good: Ericka van Helsing Learned To Love Monsters Despite Being Raised Not To
Ericka was raised by Abraham Van Helsing to despise all types of monsters. During a large portion of the third film, Ericka was filled with so much hatred towards monsters. When Dracula saved her life, Ericka realized that monsters had some good in them. During the final battle, she went against Abraham’s wishes to help the monsters survive the Kraken’s attack.
She becomes an even better character in the fourth film. She acts as a supportive wife to Dracula, encouraging him to do the right thing and helping him fix his mistakes. While everyone else was piling on him for accidentally transforming his friends, she knew that joining in would only do more harm than good. She didn’t seem put off at all by his human form either.
9 Bad: Abraham Van Helsing Dedicated His Life To Eradicating Monsters
Abraham was a monster hunter, so dedicated to his craft that he spent most of his life making numerous attempts to kill Dracula. He raised Ericka to have the same hatred for monsters, and at one point was willing to sacrifice her in order to ensure the death of all monsters.
Although he did manage to turn over a new leaf, he has taken on the role of a mad scientist. He used an invention to turn Johnny into a monster, although he had no idea what the consequences would be. He is also the cause of Hotel Transylvania’s destruction, although this was not intentional.
8 Good: Mavis Strives To Be A Good Wife And Parent
Mavis has a tendency to see the best in people. Although Dracula is deceptive, she can always see his good intentions. Despite her father’s stories that humans were horrible and vicious, she still wanted to go out into the world and give them a chance.
She is very protective of her husband, and is extremely intolerant of discrimination. She doesn’t hesitate to defend the people she loves when necessary. She is also a great parent. She strives to meet her son’s needs, and all of the decisions that she makes in the second film are in Dennis’ best interests, especially since he doesn’t develop his vampire powers until the end.
7 Bad: Dracula Is Incredibly Dishonest
Dracula is a compulsive liar who caused most of the film’s problems. He created a fake human village to terrify Mavis into staying with him, which was incredibly manipulative. He would also growl at and threaten his friends, making them all a little scared of him.
He pressured Dennis to become a vampire, even throwing him off a dangerously high tower to speed up his transformation. Dracula even had a hard time accepting his son-in-law, making Johnny feel left out. Although Dracula managed to redeem himself in each film, he made the same mistakes over and over again.
6 Good: Johnny Is Accepting And Thinks About The Happiness Of Others
When Johnny discovered that Hotel Transylvania was filled with monsters, he was understandably shocked. He quickly got over his fear, seeing that they weren’t so different from him. He got along with the other monsters and became the life of the party.
Every change that he made to the hotel was intended to make others happy. After the hotel was destroyed, he and Mavis decided to keep the exterior the same for Dracula’s sake. Johnny is also the type of person who welcomes change. Unlike Dracula, whose life remained stagnant and unchanging for years, Johnny realized that people and their perspectives could change, and that monsters had the potential to get along with humans.
5 Bad: Bela Wanted To Destroy Humans And Human-Sympathizers
Bela harbored the strongest hatred for humans. Just thinking about humans made the man-bat leader lose his temper. When he discovered that Hotel Transylvania harbored humans, he wanted to destroy the hotel and everyone within it.
Unlike other monsters, who hated humans out of fear, Bela looked down on humans. He delighted in how weak and helpless Dennis was, and despite the fact that Dennis was a half-vampire, Bela was eager to kill him. Bela nearly killed Johnny, but Johnny was saved by Vlad in the nick of time.
4 Good: Dennis Was Kind And Only Used His Powers To Protect Others
Dennis is a sweet child who has his father’s high energy and optimism. He was eager to develop his vampire powers in order to become a hero. Although he was bullied by the other human children in his family, he never did anything in retaliation.
He used his powers primarily to protect his friend Winnie from Bela. He is never vengeful, but extremely caring. After getting a puppy from Dracula, he did his best to be a good owner. He felt so guilty about leaving Tinkles behind that he chose to sneak his dog onto the cruise.
3 Bad: Frank Has A Gambling Addiction And Can Be Self-Absorbed
Frank is one of Dracula’s best friends and as long as he isn’t being terrified by fire, he is a gentle giant. Although he hates doing so, he keeps secrets from Mavis when Dracula asks him to. The third and fourth films brought out the worst in him. They showed that he has a terrible gambling addiction.
Going against his wife’s warnings, he lost his hands while gambling, and was forced to replace them with lobster claws at the seafood buffet. When he became a human, he immediately became self-absorbed, falling in love with his own beauty. He spent all of his time as a human bragging about his good looks, much to the exasperation of his friends.
2 Good: Dana Prioritizes The Safety Of His Campers
Dana is Camp Winnepacaca’s director, a camp for young vampires. Under his leadership, he made the camp much safer for campers. Although he stated that it was for insurance reasons, the vampires were young children who didn’t look like they could handle the kind of training that Dracula received as a child.
His goal was to build the confidence of the campers and to provide them with a safe environment. He succeeded in doing both, until Dracula and his friends accidentally set the camp on fire in an unforeseen accident.
1 Bad: The Gremlins Are A Menace To All Passengers Aboard Their Plane
Gremlins love chaos more than any other monster. A group of them are seen working for Gremlin Air, an airline service utilizing planes that are on the verge of falling apart. They destroy the luggage of anyone foolish enough to board their flight. They have also been seen advising customers to unbuckle their seat belts, running over customers with the snack cart, pouring coffee on customers, throwing customers out of the plane, and even crashing the plane. It is a true miracle that any human or monster is willing to board their flights.
