One Tree Hill ranks among the most popular of the teen dramas of the early 2000s. The series got its start on the WB network and continued onto the CW when the WB merged with UPN. The initial premise of the series was about the rivalry between two half-brothers on and off the basketball court in Tree Hill, North Carolina, but the series grew beyond that initial premise and ran for nine seasons. The first four took place in high school, while the final five took place after college. Covering so many years of drama and storytelling, below is a ranking of each season rated from worst to best.
9) One Tree Hill, Season 7
The satisfying ending for Peyton and Lucas left the series in a difficult position when the series continued on without them. The series again does a time jump at the beginning of Season 7, as well as introduces new characters, Haley’s sister Quinn and Nathan’s agent Clay. The new characters are interesting and everything, but the loss of the brother relationship between Lucas and Nathan is difficult to overcome as their rivalry turned bond is the foundation for the whole series. That is the main reason why Season 7 is the worst of the series.
8) One Tree Hill, Season 8
Season 8 of One Tree Hill is better than Season 7 because it finds a way to rebuild itself after the loss of the foundational relationship in Season 7. It also features Brooke’s wedding, and she had been through so much over the course of the series, it was satisfying to see her get her day in the spotlight. She even ends the season pregnant, a dream she has had since the first time jump in Season 5. Despite all the ups and downs the characters go through this season, it is a season full of joy.
7) One Tree Hill, Season 5
Making the jump four years into the future dramatically changed the scope and structure of One Tree Hill. It was no longer the story of high school students, and instead the characters started to go through much more adult problems. The jump helped the believability of the older actors playing the younger characters; however, much of the charm of the high school setting was lost in the transition. In addition, some of the drama, including Lucas’ almost wedding to Lindsey and Nathan’s back injury, seemed contrived and disappointing in comparison to where the series left the characters at the end of Season 4.
6) One Tree Hill, Season 6
Season 6 is better than Season 5 for a couple reasons. The first is the heartbreaking conclusion to the Quentin Fields storyline, which is incredibly impactful and one of the most iconic arcs of One Tree Hill. Secondly, the romances are right where they were supposed to be after the detours of Season 5, as Peyton and Lucas get their happily ever after. Their wedding and the birth of their daughter was so meaningful for fans who’d been cheering for them since the pilot.
5) One Tree Hill, Season 2
Season 2 is the worst season of the high school years of One Tree Hill. Nathan and Haley shockingly get married at the end of Season 1, but they then spend most of Season 2 separated while Haley is on tour. Basketball is no longer a central focus, which pulls some of the heart out of the series and makes it a bit less unique among other teen drama series. The season does have some great elements though, as it introduces the night club that plays into the series’ reputation for iconic music and big name guest stars, as well as introduces Karen’s future husband Andy.
4) One Tree Hill, Season 9
Despite some of the difficulties that the post-high school seasons of the series struggled through, the final season, Season 9, ends One Tree Hill off in a really enjoyable and satisfying way. Especially the finale when fans get a glimpse of Nathan and Haley’s son in high school playing basketball for the Ravens, just like his father and uncle. The final season gives the characters their happy ending, but also includes the specific kind of drama and wild storylines that made One Tree Hill stand out and be so well loved among fans. Even Lucas returns for a bit to round out the series once and for all.
3) One Tree Hill, Season 1
The first season is one of the best in the whole series. It becomes instantly iconic for its music and the relationship drama between the central characters. It also gives its characters room and builds a strong foundation for the series to come. Nathan starts off as a real jerk, but he grows into a lovable softie, and Brooke starts off as a vapid party girl but grows into someone much more interesting than that. The first season really set the standard for the rest of the series.
2) One Tree Hill, Season 3
Season 3 of One Tree Hill is one of the most heart-breaking of the whole series. The absolutely iconic school shooting story arc that includes the tragic murder of uncle Keith at the hands of his brother, Dan, helps to elevate the season above the others. It also features some happier moments with Nathan and Haley’s vow renewals, and the arrival of Rachel brings the drama to a whole new level. The third season has all the best pieces of the series as a whole, and that’s why it’s the second best in the series.
1) One Tree Hill, Season 4
There are a few reasons why Season 4 is the best of all of One Tree Hill. The Ravens finally win the championship, and during that game, Lucas gives a truly stunning and quintessential declaration to Peyton. After years of them going back and forth in their relationship, they finally get together for real beneath a downpour of confetti; plus, they recieve Brooke’s blessing. In a lot of ways, it would have been really satisfying for the entire series to have ended with the Season 4 finale. While we’re glad that it didn’t end here, and we got to spend more time with our favorite characters, there’s something so satisfying about every episode in this season that makes it the best in the entire series.
