Uncharted Director Reveals the Most ‘Nerve-Racking’ Scene to Shoot

Uncharted director Ruben Fleischer recently revealed which scene was the most nerve-racking to shoot.

Speaking to ComicBook.com, Fleischer highlighted an underwater scene in Uncharted which proved to be the most difficult to film. In the scene, Tom Holland’s Nathan Drake and Sophia Ali’s Chloe Frazer attempt to escape from a crypt as it fills with water. Shooting the scene was a new experience for Fleischer. “There are a couple of noteworthy things about that. I’d never done something quite like that,” He said. “Maybe I had limited water work in things [past], but never like a situation where a whole set gets filled with water.”

Fleischer spoke about the logistics of filming the scene. He said that the set was fitted with fixed cameras before being lowered into a tank to create the illusion that it was filling with water. “And then, when the take’s done, then we go back up and all the water drains out, and we do it again,” he explained. “Which was super creative, but, certainly, time-consuming.”

Although Fleischer was delighted with the exhilarating scene, he stressed his concern for the actors’ wellbeing while filming in water for prolonged periods. “It’s fun doing sequences like that, but, at the same time, it’s always a little nerve-wracking when you have actors in real jeopardy… I mean, they literally were underwater and holding their breath for an extended time.”

Fleischer added that safety divers were present throughout to ensure the actors were in good hands, although the use of actors instead of professional stunt performers made the scene more nerve-wracking. He also praised Uncharted‘s lead actors Holland and in particular Ali for their handling of the scene. “Sophia, actually, her lung capacity is insane,” he added. “I think she could actually stay underwater longer than Tom. And so, that made it easier.”

Uncharted follows Nate, a street-wise bartender recruited by Victor Sullivan, a fortune hunter portrayed by Mark Wahlberg. The two travel across the globe in search of lost treasure, accompanied by Chloe. The film also stars Antonio Banderas and Tati Gabrielle as its main antagonists.

According to Sony, the movie serves as a prequel to Naughty Dog’s Uncharted video game franchise. Ali recently revealed that she got into character by playing through the series. Her character features in the second and third installments and was also the lead protagonist in the spinoff titled Uncharted: The Lost Legacy.

The Uncharted movie has received disappointing reviews by critics. However, it has performed well at the box office despite its critical reception. It was recently reported that the film has become the highest-earning video game movie since Sonic the Hedgehog.

Uncharted is available in theaters now.
