Andrew Garfield’s first reaction when he was approached to star in Spider-Man: No Way Home wasn’t altogether confident — in fact, he called the movie a “stupid idea.”
Garfield discussed his experience appearing in the record-breaking Marvel Cinematic Universe film during an interview on The Graham Norton Show. When asked, “Did it feel like a high-risk thing to do?” the actor easily admitted, “Yeah, it was a…stupid idea.” He continued laughing, “It was a really, really scary thing to attempt, yeah!”
Clearly, the risk wasn’t high enough for Garfield to refuse to attempt it, but he clarified his initial concerns citing his age and his distance from the character of Spider-Man. “Especially just the costume,” he noted. “A 38-year-old man in a spandex — you know.” Norton called the characteristic superhero costumes “unforgiving,” and Garfield agreed, “They are. It was intimidating, very intimidating.”
No Way Home thrilled Spidey fans by bringing back not only Garfield’s version of Peter Parker, but his own predecessor, Tobey Maguire. The actors, who had each in turn headlined their own Spider-Man movie franchise, starred alongside the MCU’s current Spider-Man, played by Tom Holland. The story sees Holland’s young hero attempt to erase his secret identity from the memories of the world, which results in a collapse of the multiverse’s barriers, melding different realities.
The involvement of Garfield and Maguire was subject to intense speculation and many leaks, but the fact that the two actors were reprising their versions of Spider-Man for the film was for the most part successfully kept a secret. Garfield and Maguire steadfastly denied the rumors up until the day that No Way Home hit theaters, although both admitted to struggling with it. Ultimately, working on the movie together seems to have been an enjoyable bonding experience for all three Spider-Men.
The daring plot and ambitious cast paid off for No Way Home, making the film a critical and commercial success. It recently crossed $760.988 million in the US and became the third-highest-grossing movie of all time at the domestic box office, dethroning James Cameron’s Avatar.
Spider-Man: No Way Home is currently showing in theaters. The film will be available to stream on Starz sometime in the next six months.
