Ryan Reynolds Never Wanted to Join Star Wars – But Might If Asked

Ryan Reynolds, who’s one of a handful of actors to have appeared in both Marvel and DC movies, revealed he’s open to adding the Star Wars franchise to his resume.

While speaking to Variety about his upcoming sci-fi film The Adam Project, which includes a running gag about Star Wars, Reynolds was asked if he’d consider traveling to a galaxy far, far away. “That would be a real hard thing to say no to, but honestly — I’m not making this up — it’s not something I’ve ever thought of,” he said.

There are several Star Wars projects in various stages of development, so Reynolds could have plenty of potential options come his way. In addition to Disney+ shows like The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi, Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins is currently developing Rogue Squadron, the first Star Wars feature since 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker.

Reynolds’ popularity grew exponentially following the massive success of 2016’s Deadpool, which showcased the actor’s sarcastic humor and quick wit. The R-rated Marvel movie spawned a 2018 sequel that also proved to be a big hit at the box office. Deadpool 3, which will bring the Merc with a Mouth to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has remained in movie limbo for several years, but Reynolds recently provided a brief update on the long-awaited threequel. “It’s coming along,” he said when pressed for details on the film’s status.

Speculation about Deadpool making his MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness recently emerged after several fans insisted that the character appears in a shard of glass featured on the film’s latest poster. Following the online debate, however, Reynolds insisted in an interview that he’s “not in the movie.”

Reynolds’s latest movie, Netflix’s The Adam Project, sees him reuniting with Free Guy director Shawn Levy. The high-concept sci-fi adventure centers on a time-traveling fighter pilot who teams up his younger self in an attempt to save the future. The family-friendly film is said to be a throwback to classic ’80s movies like E.T., Back to the Future and The Goonies.

Even if Reynolds were offered a Star Wars project, there’s one possible reason he’d turn down the opportunity. In Oct. 2021, Reynolds announced he would be taking a break from acting after wrapping his upcoming holiday film Spirited, a modern retelling of Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol that co-stars Will Ferrell and Octavia Spencer. “Perfect time for a little sabbatical from movie making,” he wrote in a social media post commemorating the end of production on the film.

The Adam Project debuts on Netflix on March 11.
