The Batman Joins Joker as an AMC Artisan Film Selection | CBR

Matt Reeves’ The Batman has just earned a distinction no comic book film other than 2019’s Joker has ever received, as AMC Theatres recently awarded its Artisan Films seal to the Caped Crusader’s upcoming movie.

AMC explained its decision behind celebrating The Batman as an innovative, artist-driven and thought-provoking film worthy of its Artisan Films seal. Shared by a user on Twitter, the announcement notes The Batman uses “themes of film noir to unmask a fresh and effective detective story.” The announcement goes on to applaud The Batman‘s “expressionistic camera work,” “captivating” score and “enticing use of color palette” to “enhance this daring and very suspenseful cinematic experience.” AMC also recognized the film’s actors for delivering a “delicious cast of character performances.” Paul Dano in particular was given a nod for his portrayal of the “haunting yet captivating sadistic killer” known as the Riddler.

After receiving the very same distinction, Todd Phillips’ Joker went on to earn a leading 11 nominations, including Best Picture, at the 2020 Academy Awards. Star Joaquín Phoenix won his first Best Actor Oscar for his performance as Arthur Fleck, the mentally unstable, disenfranchised stand-up comedian who becomes the Clown Prince of Crime. Though Batman movies have long helped to redefine comic book films, Joker was still criticized for its portrayal of mental illness and its alleged potential to inspire real-world violence. That isn’t to say The Batman will be backing down from challenging or disturbing issues, however, as Reeves recently emphasized that his upcoming film will push the limits of its PG-13 rating.

While AMC celebrates The Batman as a detective story, star Robert Pattinson admitted it wasn’t until he began work on the film that he learned of the Dark Knight’s reputation as “the world’s greatest detective.” “I hadn’t heard that in my life before,” Pattinson said of the title, “but it really plays.” In fact, Pattinson corroborated AMC calling The Batman a detective story, with the actor going on to reveal just how heavily the film leans into the vigilante’s sleuthing side. “Normally, when you see Batman he arrives and beats people up,” Pattinson said. “But he’s having conversations, and there are emotional scenes between them, which I don’t think have been in any of the other movies.”

True to his own reputation, not much is currently known about what Dano’s Riddler has in store for Gotham or its Dark Knight, but a recently released international trailer did provide some clues as to what the Prince of Puzzles has up his sleeve. Titled “Truth,” the Riddler-heavy trailer shows Dano’s character directly addressing Batman’s reclusive alter-ego, Bruce Wayne, with the sinister serial killer promising to make Bruce answer for the “sins of [his] father.”

The Batman debuts in theaters March 4.
