Jensen Ackles’ Mystery DC Project Involves Arrowverse Boss Greg Berlanti

Jensen Ackles of Supernatural is working on a mystery project based on DC Comics, and although he won’t yet disclose any details, it’s now been revealed that the Arrowverse’s executive producer Greg Berlanti is involved too.

A schedule for the 2022 SXSW convention in Austin, TX lists Ackles as a guest, providing a description of his career which includes the line, “Jensen is also developing an Untitled DC Project with Greg Berlanti.” Previously, Ackles had mentioned the project during a podcast interview, saying, “There is a DC property that I’m currently developing right now with Warner Bros. and some other good partners.” However, he didn’t give any names and committed to keeping silent, because “you don’t wanna jinx it.”

At The WB, Berlanti is well known as the producer behind the enormously successful Arrowverse, consisting of interconnected shows based on DC characters like The Flash and Supergirl. However, Berlanti also lends his talents to DC productions outside of the Arrowverse, so his involvement in Ackles’ mystery project doesn’t necessarily mean that Ackles will be appearing in that TV universe. In fact, Berlanti currently holds the record for having the highest number of television programs concurrently airing, having worked on 15 shows for the 2019-2020 television season.

Ackles played Dean Winchester, one of the two leads on The WB/The CW’s Supernatural, for all 15 seasons that the show was on the air. After it concluded in 2020, he kept his acting career going strong. He’ll be playing the character of Soldier Boy in the upcoming third season of The BoysSupernatural creator Eric Kripke’s live-action adaptation of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s violently satirical superhero comic, which is slated to premiere on Prime Video this year on Friday, June 3. Ackles is also co-developing a Supernatural spinoff/prequel series titled The Winchesters, in which he will narrate the show in character as Dean.

The mystery project with Berlanti won’t be Ackles’ first brush with DC. The actor once starred on Smallville opposite Rosenbaum, playing the character of Jason Teague in the Superman prequel series’ fourth season from 2004 to 2005. Ackles also voiced Batman himself for a two-part film series, Batman: The Long Halloween.

Both in and out of the Arrowverse, there are a wealth of DC characters that Ackles might portray, and fans of both his and Berlanti’s will surely to be excited to find out more about their collaboration.
