With the slow introduction of the multiverse into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it appears things are now in full swing, as the latest trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness makes it look like one of the wildest movies to date. But with the amount of chaos the multiverse is causing, it raises questions of how soon it’ll need to be sealed off from the main timeline before things get too out of hand.
The Time Variance Authority in Loki offered the best look at how the multiverse works, but throughout most of the show, the main MCU timeline was kept untouched. After Sylvie killed He Who Remains and broke the timeline open, What If…? showed the chaos of other timelines and the potential dangers that could cross over. And with the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans caught a glimpse at the turmoil the multiverse can cause. But now, it looks like Doctor Strange will have to deal with the full might of crossing timelines.
Every piece of MCU media so far has painted the multiverse in a bad light, even No Way Home. While it was good for Peter Parker to meet the other Spider-Man variants, the damage caused by the spell could’ve been catastrophic. It’s undoubtedly fun for fans to see characters from non-MCU movies crossing over, but with the amount of danger the multiverse is causing, something will need to stop it sooner rather than later.
The latest Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer opens with Strange saying, “I did what I had to do to protect our world,” likely referring to his spell at the end of No Way Home. Knowing that he caused all the chaos seen in the trailer, it’s a safe bet to assume Strange will attempt to fix his mistake and seal off the multiverse. While this sounds like the logical conclusion that will save the day, it’s also hard to believe that multiverse will end so soon.
If the multiverse madness is to be stopped while also allowing fan-favorite Marvel characters to cross into the MCU, Strange will have to find a way to close off the multiverse that allows beings from other universes to stay. However, the key to accomplishing this may be the mysterious council seen in the Multiverse of Madness trailer, which fans speculate could be the elusive Illuminati.
Within the Marvel comics, the Illuminati is made up of some of the best minds in the multiverse, including Professor Xavier, who seemingly appears in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. Together, they share information about potential alien dangers and deal with them accordingly. This group could very well be questioning the reckless acts of Steven Strange while also figuring out a way to stabilize the multiverse.
No matter how it’s dealt with, the MCU now faces a large problem with its multiverse. Fans love seeing the re-introduction of classic Marvel characters that predate the MCU, yet with all of the destruction the multiverse is causing, it clearly needs to be closed off sooner rather than later.
To see how he deals with the multiverse, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits theaters on May 6.
