Snyder Cut Fans Mobilize to Win Justice League an Oscar in the Fan-Voted Category

The passionate fanbase surrounding Zack Snyder’s Justice League is back at it again, this time calling for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to give an Oscar to Snyder’s film.

The Academy recently announced that Twitter users will be able to vote for this year’s nominees and Zack Snyder’s Justice League fans have come out on social media in droves to express their support for the film’s nomination. Using the hashtag #OscarsFanFavorite, fans have posted shots of Snyder’s completed film, urging fellow fans to join the social media campaign.

After years in development, Warner Bros.’ Justice League began filming in 2016 with Snyder attached as director. During production, Warner Bros. requested numerous rewrites, largely owing to the negative reception of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which was criticized for being too dark and lengthy.

Unfortunately, Snyder was forced to depart from Justice League owing to a family tragedy and was replaced with Avengers director Joss Whedon. The studio and Whedon reshot many scenes and rewrote the film in order to give it a lighter tone. The 2017 film was met with mixed reviews from critics and failed at the box office, earning $657.9 million on a budget of approximately $300 million.

Following the film’s release, Justice League formed a wide and vocal fanbase, who spent years demanding Warner Bros. to allow Snyder to complete his version of the film. Some of the film’s stars joined in on the #ReleasetheSnyderCut movement, confirming that his version was already near completion and only needed visual effects work to be completed.

Eventually, HBO Max provided Snyder with a budget to complete what is now referred to as Zack Snyder’s Justice League. The film was released on the streaming service in March 2021. The four hour-long feature film was criticized for its length but praised for Snyder’s direction and for delving deeper into the characters.

Despite Warner Bros. relenting to fans, the experience was not entirely pleasant for Snyder, who previously revealed, “It was cool to do the Snyder Cut of Justice League and that was fun and everything. But Warner Bros. still tortured me the whole time for whatever reason, they can’t help it. I don’t know why I’m such a fucking pain in their ass because I’m not trying to be, honestly.”

It’s uncertain whether or not Snyder will continue to produce films set in the DCEU. There is another ongoing movement fans are participating in. The #RestoretheSnyderVerse movement calls for Snyder to continue helming the shared cinematic universe.
