Ryan Reynolds Marks Deadpool Anniversary with BTS Photos | CBR

Ryan Reynolds celebrates the anniversary of the first Deadpool by sharing some behind-the-scenes photos.

The actor posted the pictures to his Instagram with the caption “Six years today. Iron anniversary.” Among the images are Reynolds getting a costume fitting and showing off his extensive facial prosthetics to play the disfigured Wade Wilson unmasked. In the photos, alongside Reynolds are director Tim Miller, screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, president of Maximum Effort George Dewey and Reynolds’ various co-stars like T.J. Miller (Weasel) and Brianna Hildebrand (Negasonic Teenage Warhead). Reynolds also included stills from the movie, featuring characters Colossus (Stefan Kapičić), Blind Al (Leslie Uggams) and Vanessa (Morena Baccarin).

Reynolds first played Wade Wilson, a fast-talking but highly competent mercenary, in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine. While the film was poorly received by most audiences, Reynolds’ performance was singled out as one of the highlights by fans — when his mouth wasn’t sewn shut onscreen. Reynolds made it clear he wanted to keep playing the character as much as fans did, but 20th Century Fox was hesitant to move forward with the project due to its R-rated nature and the flop of Reynolds’ other superhero blockbuster: 2011’s Green Lantern. However, Miller was given a low budget to create test footage showing what a Deadpool movie might look like, which was shelved until it leaked online in 2014 to an overwhelmingly positive response.

After that, Fox finally greenlit the project.

Deadpool was released on Feb. 12, 2016 to positive reviews and strong ticket sales, becoming the 9th highest-grossing film that year. A sequel, Deadpool 2, came out two years later with David Leitch taking over as director and new cast members signing on, like Josh Brolin (Cable), Julian Dennison (Russell Collins) and Zazie Beetz (Domino). Like its predecessor, Deadpool 2 was well-received and a financial success.

A third Deadpool movie, as well as an X-Force movie featuring the character, were in development at Fox before the company was acquired by The Walt Disney Company. CEO Bob Iger and Marvel Studios chairman Kevin Feige have both confirmed their plans for making a third film, which would integrate Deadpool into the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, like the prior two entries, be rated R. Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, co-creators of the animated series The Great North, will write the screenplay. In November 2021, Reynolds gave a vague update on Deadpool 3‘s production, saying he and his team were “Plugging away. I can’t really comment right now. Hopefully soon, though.”

Deadpool and its sequel are currently available to stream on Hulu.
