How Charlie Cox and Andrew Garfield Almost Gave Away Their MCU Arrivals

Charlie Cox once feared he had revealed his surprise appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home by having lunch with fellow secret returnee Andrew Garfield.

During filming of No Way Home, Cox and Garfield found themselves in Atlanta at the same time due to an overlap in their production schedules. The two good friends arranged to have lunch, but soon realized their error, Cox told THR: “While we were sitting down, it occurred to both of us, ‘Oh, s–t. If we’re filmed here together, that’s not a good sign.’ So we ended up sitting, facing the wall, both of us.”

Keeping his return to the role of Matt Murdock/Daredevil a secret weighed heavily on Cox, who said that now that the movie is out and the spoiler dam has burst, it’s a great relief. “I hate lying,” Cox explained. “But I really don’t want to ruin it for anyone. My feeling is, if someone asks you, and you say, ‘I don’t know … We’ll have to wait and see.’ That gives it away! It’s obvious! No one is going to say that if you’re not in it. I am relieved it’s over.”

Cox played Matt in the Netflix series Daredevil. Although a Marvel property, Daredevil is not considered part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making No Way Home his MCU debut. When Cox was initially contacted by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about appearing in No Way Home, Cox’s initial reaction was one of disbelief. “It was a pretty surreal moment, I’m not going to lie,” Cox explained. “Bear in mind that it’s been a few years. And I was pretty convinced it was over.”

Now the debut has happened, Cox has hopes for future MCU appearances for Daredevil. “I think at this point I expect to be involved [in the MCU] in some capacity, otherwise it’d be a bit of a weird one-scene moment,” he said.

Like Cox, Garfield found lying about his return to be stressful. Garfield last appeared as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and he said that keeping his role in No Way Home secret to be “rather stressful but also weirdly enjoyable.” Ultimately, Garfield felt it would benefit the fans if the secret was kept. “I would want the actor to do an incredibly good job at convincing me he wasn’t in it. And then I would want to lose my mind in the theater when my instinct was proven right. That’s what I would want.”
