The Walking Dead: 10 Creepiest Characters, Ranked | CBR

It’s no surprise that a series about the living dead roaming the planet is filled with unsavory, unsettling survivors. Creepy characters are a staple of AMC’s The Walking DeadIn a world overrun with corpses, murderers, and miscreants, the levels of creepy vary wildly.

Some of these creepy characters had viewers turning away in terror, others simply had fans questioning their motives. Whatever mistakes these The Walking Dead characters made, they were always captivating with their creepiness. Heroes need villains, and the likes of Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon had these creepy characters to contend with during their time on The Walking Dead.

10 Eugene Porter Was A Peeping Tom

Eugene’s early years in The Walking Dead are plagued with poor decisions, outright lies, and acts of cowardice. Josh McDermitt’s Eugene was incredibly hard to get behind. Any chance of him earning sympathy was washed away when viewers saw that he liked to moonlight as a peeping tom.

Later years would see Eugene earn his redemption. However, he maintained an unhealthy fascination with Rosita that only seemed to subside once another woman came into the picture. The world had ended, so it’s understandable for Eugene to feel lonely, but one has to imagine he wasn’t much different before the dead roamed the streets.

9 Axel Developed An Unsettling Interest In Beth Greene

Axel seemed a good-natured, if poorly educated, man. However, his hovering around the young Beth Greene made him a deeply unsettling presence at The Walking Dead’s prison. Additionally, Lew Temple’s Axel called the penitentiary his home before the outbreak, making him a figure that few fans could trust.

Axel didn’t last long on The Walking Dead, so he arguably never had the chance to show his true colors. Even with that said, Axel never did much outside of attempting to socialize with the girls.

8 Merle Was One Of The Walking Dead’s Most Disturbing Characters

Michael Rooker’s Merle is an unhinged hillbilly and remains a fan favorite amongst The Walking Dead’s die-hard followers. Even though he earned redemption in the end, there’s no escaping the unforgivable acts that Merle Dixon committed.

Merle delivered Maggie and Glenn to The Governor and seemed to take great pleasure in doing so. The fact he managed to survive season 1 by hacking off his arm only added to his aura. What really cements Merle as a creepy character is his unwanted advances thrown in the way of Andrea and Michonne.

7 Negan’s Villainy May Be Legendary But It’s Still Creepy

Negan may not seem all that creepy on the surface. However, when fans really dive into his antics in The Sanctuary, feelings get a lot darker toward Negan Smith. Negan seems to enjoy brutally attacking people and burning the skin off of his subjects’ faces. Additionally, Negan forced multiple women into marrying him. Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s iconic villain has taken many steps to redeem himself as a hero in The Walking Dead, but for some fans, there’s no redeeming Negan.

6 The Governor Was A Terrific And Terrifying Big Bad

The Governor The Walking Dead

Few characters in the history of The Walking Dead have ever been as purely evil as Philip Blake. He may not be quite as dastardly as his comic book counterpart, but AMC’s version of The Governor does his fair share of despicable acts during his time on The Walking Dead.

From assaulting Maggie to his chilling manipulation of Andrea, The Governor always cut an intimidating presence on The Walking Dead. The Governor even managed one of The Walking Dead‘s highest on-screen kill counts despite only being around for a short time.

5 Much Like The Zombies, Gareth Had A Taste For Human Flesh

Eating human meat is usually a habit reserved for The Walking Dead’s zombies. Gareth and his group changed that perception when they showed their true colors on AMC’s The Walking Dead. Not only was Gareth the leader of a group of cannibals, but he also seemed proud to have adopted such a disgusting diet. His repulsive habit eventually led to a gruesome and brutal death. Given that the Terminus survivors placed such little value on the lives of others, they arguably deserved that final meeting with Rick’s red-handed machete.

4 The Leader Of The Wolves Made Most Fans Squirm In Their Seats

Owen, leader of the group 'The Wolves' The Walking Dead TV Show

Owen wasn’t creepy in his looks, though the blood-crusted carving on his forehead did stand out for most viewers. However, the real terror of the murderous Owen came when he opened his mouth to spew his brand of disturbing diatribes.

The leader of the Wolves did go out somewhat honorably when he ensured the survival of Denise Cloyd in exchange for his own. Unfortunately for Owen though, this wasn’t enough to make him any less creepy in the eyes of The Walking Dead faithful.

3 Beta Was One Of The Biggest And Baddest Of The Walking Dead’s Villains

Wearing a mask made from human skin is one way to guarantee chills from anyone unlucky enough to lay eyes on Beta, and Beta’s creepiness is further heightened by his incredible size. Standing at seven feet tall, Ryan Hurst’s Whisperer remains one of The Walking Dead’s most frightening figures.

He’s also willing to do just about anything for his beloved Alpha. Beta frequently creeps around amongst the corpses and attempts to take out The Walking Dead‘s heroes. He does it all while looking just like one of the zombies.

2 The Claimers Were A Reprehensible Group With No Morals

Joe, The claimers, The Walking Dead

The Claimers were never an approachable bunch. Before their ghastly attack on Rick, Michonne, and Carl, The Claimers seemed like a standard group of survivors with little concern for anyone outside of their group.

Brutal, unforgiving, and lacking any morality, The Claimers eventually got what they deserved from an enraged Officer Friendly (Rick Grimes) and Daryl Dixon. The Walking Dead has seen its share of creepy villains over the years, but few have ever elicited such disgust as The Claimers.

1 Alpha Was An Awesomely Creepy Character

Alpha on The Walking Dead

From the moment that Alpha stepped out of the darkness and uttered “Trail ends here,” Samantha Morton’s terrifying tyrant was The Walking Dead’s creepiest character. The skin-wearing Alpha not only felt completely comfortable amongst the roaming zombies, but she also thrived there.

Alpha’s appalling treatment of her own daughter only made her more intimidating for The Walking Dead’s audience. Her command over a man as huge as Beta hit home that she was not someone to be messed with. In a show where the zombies are usually the most frightful feature, Alpha managed to one-up them and finish her time on The Walking Dead as the queen of creepy.
