Charlie Cox revealed that his return as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home was designed to let audiences make some noise.
Early in the new Spider-Man film, as Peter and his family and friends struggle with the world knowing his superhero identity, the gang meets with a lawyer to discuss his options regarding the accusations that he killed Mysterio and was behind the drone attacks in Europe. The camera reveals, as many rumors had suggested, that the lawyer is none other than Matt Murdock, once again played by Charlie Cox following his time on Daredevil and The Defenders. While not everyone in the audience would have recognized the character or actor, those who saw an early screening of the film likely heard cheers and applause when Cox appeared on the screen. And according to the actor, that was director Jon Watts’ plan all along.
“Jon said, ‘I have built in this moment where we reveal you, and no one speaks for a few beats because the audience will have a big reaction,” Cox told The Hollywood Reporter. “I was a bit embarrassed, like, ‘Are you sure?’ I was going with the flow, but thinking, ‘I hope it’s not a letdown.’ But I got a lot of texts from friends who were at the premiere or saw it opening weekend, who told me there was a cool vocal reaction when that scene came on. It’s a strange feeling, but I am so grateful.”
As it turns out, Marvel Studios chief creative office and president Kevin Feige was planning Daredevil’s return for quite some time. Cox recently revealed the exact moment he learned he was going to be returning to the character when Feige came to see him in a 2019 play with Loki actor Tom Hiddleston. And the appearance won’t be a fleeting nod to fans, as all signs point towards a big future in the MCU for both Matt Murdock and Daredevil.
Cox, for one, isn’t taking it lightly. “It’s a big moment, not just for me, but for the character. I felt a real sense of responsibility,” Cox said of his scene in No Way Home. “If that scene works, if it’s cool, if it seems in place, then the sky’s the limit where this could go. And it would be great for me, naturally, but it would be great for Matt. I feel attached to him, even though that sounds a bit strange.”
Spider-Man: No Way Home is in theaters now.
