Star Trek: Discovery Season 3’s Emerald Chain Is Still Active

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Star Trek: Discovery Season 4, Episode 8, “All In,” streaming now on Paramount+.

When the crew of the USS Discovery arrived in the 32nd century at the end of Star Trek: Discovery Season 2, they found the far-future to be a significantly hostile and chaotic place. An incident known as the Burn had effectively destroyed any vessels with warp drives, resulting in the United Federation of Planets and Starfleet to fall into complete disarray and become a mere shadow of itself. And while the Discovery was able to help the Federation and Starfleet recover, one of the biggest threats of the 32nd century is revealed to still be active despite their defeat at the end of Discovery Season 3: The Emerald Chain.

In the face of the Burn and the Federation’s diminished presence in the galaxy, the Orion Syndicate and Andorians formed their own interstellar alliance known as the Emerald Chain. True to the Orion’s capitalistic tendencies, the Emerald Chain manipulated civilizations around the cosmos into entering exploitative deals with them. By the time the Discovery arrived in the 32nd century, Starfleet estimated that the Emerald Chain controlled around 50 solar systems, with the alliance aggressively expanding its reach and holding systems in its sway under an iron grip. Led by Minister Osyraa, the Emerald Chain effectively balkanized when Osyraa was killed in a battle with the Discovery.

Outside of Federation space, the remnants of the Emerald Chain are still active and doing business with more illicit black market organizations outside of Starfleet jurisdiction. Captain Michael Burnham and Cleveland “Book” Booker are competing against each other for the rare isolinium, an element powerful enough to fuel an illegal weapon designed by Book’s impromptu ally Ruon Tarka. Joining in on the competition are two representatives that had served together in the Emerald Chain before the alliance splintered, with neither pleased to see Burnham and Book as they personally led to Osyraa and her alliance’s defeat.

Though Starfleet may be making great strides towards rebuilding itself to its former glory, the Emerald Chain remains a formidable presence even if the alliance has been shattered. Prior to Osyraa’s death, the Emerald Chain was reputed to be the most advanced, powerful organization in the galaxy after the Burn. Though the alliance’s grip on the galaxy has likely been eroding for months, they possess plenty of weapons and vessels that could pose a significant risk to the Federation should they rally together to challenge Starfleet. And judging by their reaction to seeing Burnham and Book, the Orion Syndicate still has an ax to grind against the Discovery.

The Emerald Chain was the antithesis of the altruistic, peaceful ideals of the Federation, taking advantage of different civilizations for its own selfish gains rather than living together in equitable harmony. Just as the Federation saw its rise back to power and prominence, the Emerald Chain saw its own rapid decline in the face of the Discovery’s arrival. Despite this, the remnants of this syndicate are far from a toothless presence in the galaxy and more unpredictable than ever. Burnham and Book have deadly enemies in the lawless regions of the galaxy and all of Starfleet could be a target as Discovery Season 4 continues.

Created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman, Star Trek: Discovery releases new episodes Thursdays on Paramount+.
