WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Snowpiercer Season 3, Episode 2, “The Last to Go,” now available on TNT.
As Season 3 of Snowpiercer continues, Sean Bean’s Mr. Wilford is trying to gain the upperhand for when Layton returns with his breakaway train. Wilford has his guards canvassing the Eternal Engine, hoping to suss out the rebels in the meantime, while working cerebral tricks, such as using Zarah’s unborn baby as a guinea pig to get back at Layton. However, while Wilford’s all about weaponizing people, the latest episode confirmed he has the ultimate weapon for Layton’s locomotive, and it’s one he can use against his enemies to send a powerful message.
Season 3 confirmed Javi, an engineer who worked with Layton’s rebels, wasn’t killed; he was mauled and kept a prisoner by Wilford. He knew the value of Javi’s intelligence, so he had the scientist work on a secret weapon for him. Javi’s afraid, so it’s understandable why he’d do everything Wilford asked, no matter how dangerous. After all, Wilford made it clear he could be a benevolent god, scaring Javi, who didn’t want to be treated like the other traitors.
At first, it was vague what the weapon was, but when they tested the mini-reactor, it sent an electrical surge through the 1,023 cars, worrying people who could sense the boss was up to no good. Later on, when Pike and the other rebels found it, it was activated and revealed to be an EMP, setting off a charge and temporarily knocking power out.
They didn’t know the full settings, with this just being a defense mechanism and failsafe to alert Wilford folks were trying to steal his toy. Pike’s crew ran off with it, but without knowing how to unlock it, it might not be of much use. That said, the choice will come whether to destroy it by tossing it out the train or risk trying to co-opt it. It’ll have to be done quickly, however, as Wilford’s goons were already on the move to apprehend the thieves.
Luckily, the signal showed Layton’s train where to find Big Alice, so they took a parallel track and caught up with Wilford’s ark. However, this is where the deadly gambit got even dicier, because if Wilford recovers the EMP, he can depower and possibly destroy Layton’s Snowpiercer.
There’s also the off-chance he had a backup, as the proactive Wilford has always been about contingency measures, which will give him a second strike at the enemy. Either way, Wilford has been cooking up a lot of sinister things in his lab, leaving the Resistance more frightened than ever over what’s clearly an expanded arsenal.
See how this weapon is used by either side in Season 3 of Snowpiercer, with new episodes airing Mondays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on TNT.
