The Batman star Peter Sarsgaard is likely one of the few cast members of the upcoming film who’s more interested in bats than the man, as the actor recently discussed his real-life obsession with the animals.
Sarsgaard talked about his passion for the cave-dwelling creatures, with the actor revealing the origin story behind his obsession. “I feel like I’m a conservationist of bats,” Sarsgaard said during an interview with Total Film magazine. “Here in the North East, we have this thing that’s wiped out like 90 per cent of the bat population, so I got very interested in trying to help.” Sarsgaard’s conservation efforts have even led him to build the bats their own shelters, as the actor continued, saying, “The bat home [I built] definitely attracts a lot of bats, but I also built a little cabin, and I always have at least as many bats in that house as I do in the official bat house.”
Yet Sarsgaard’s decision to join The Batman was, in fact, not due to the titular vigilante or his namesake, but rather the vision of director Matt Reeves. “The vision of Matt; wanting to be a part of something really cool,” Sarsgaard said in response to what drew him to the film. ” I was actually not immediately compelled because I’m some kind of comic-book fan. I’m maybe one of the few actors that will answer you truthfully and say I didn’t follow anything like this growing up.”
Sarsgaard will be playing District Attorney Gil Colson when The Batman hits theaters next month, and so the actor was asked about his wife, actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, who also played a Gotham DA in 2008’s Dark Knight. Sarsgaard’s response, however, focused instead on how fascinated he was by observing late Joker actor Heath Ledger going into Dark Knight. “The one that she was in, it was so interesting to see Heath,” Sarsgaard said. “I remember how confident he was, going into… ‘Confident’ is the wrong word. Sometimes you see an actor before filming starts, and you’re like, ‘Oh, right, they’ve got it.’ It was really interesting to be able to see it.”
Catwoman actor Zoë Kravitz discussed interacting with the animals of her character’s namesake during filming on The Batman, with Kravitz calling her fellow felines her most difficult co-stars. “The funniest thing would be us getting ready to shoot and we’d have these cat wranglers come in who had these toys to make the cats stay on their marks,” Kravitz said, “and it would kinda work, but not really. So, it ended up that we were always waiting for the cats… The funny thing about working with cats is that they don’t care — which is why we love them.”
The Batman hits theaters March 4.
