Mike Myers will reprise his role as Dr. Evil from the Austin Powers franchise in an upcoming commercial set to air during Super Bowl LVI.
General Motors (GM) shared a promo from the commercial, which will air during the Super Bowl on Feb. 13, that featured Myers as Dr. Evil. “Pinkies up people,” the caption read. “Sunday, February 13, evil is back for good.” GM shared the promo with a hashtag referencing the company’s “Everbody in” tagline, which it has been using to market its electric vehicles. “His name is legendary,” the text of the promo reads. “His plans are diabolical. He rules not with an iron fist but an iron pinkie.”
Dr. Evil is not the only Austin Powers villain set to appear during GM’s upcoming Super Bowl. Subsequent teases also featured the return Dr. Evil’s entourage, including Rob Lowe, who portrayed both Young Number Two and Middle Number Two in the Austin Powers films, as well as Seth Green as Scott Evil and Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina.
First appearing in the 1997 action comedy film, Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Dr. Evil is the nemesis of the spy Austin Powers, also portrayed by Myers, and appeared as the main antagonist in the following two films in the series, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002). All three films were written and produced by Myers, with Jay Roach serving as the director. In 2020, Roach discussed the possibility of a fourth Austin Powers film, saying another installment would depend on Myers.
“I wouldn’t say ‘never never…I’m always game for whatever [Mike Myers] wants to do,” Roach said at the time. “It does depend on Mike having something that he’s inspired about, and so far, after all these years, it hasn’t quite clicked yet.”
So far, the Super Bowl will see commercials for at least two electric vehicles, one from GM and the other from BMW. Like GM, BMW will introduce its new line of electric vehicles during the Super Bowl. However, instead of an entourage of villains, BMW turned to the Greek gods, with actor Arnold Schwarzenegger set to appear as the lightning-wielding Zeus, which was teased in a recently released promo for the commercial.
