The My Hero Academia universe is filled with a diverse set of quirks, with a majority of the population having one and most of them being unique to a person or family line. As such, not everyone has skills and quirks useful for every situation, and many times, they have to learn to optimize their strengths and mitigate their weaknesses.
For those that become Pro Heroes, or heroes-in-training at one of the hero academies, the simplest way to do this is to build out a hero costume to fill in gaps and amplify strengths. However, not every hero gets an equally useful hero costume. Many are either ineffective, plain, or just a mockery of that character.
10 Midnight’s Costume Theme Is Entirely Unnecessary
Midnight is a My Hero Academia character whose costume design has caused controversy among fans. Many see her dominatrix-style costume as being sexist or gratuitous fan service. However, it is more inconvenient than just being uncomfortable looking for battle.
Midnight’s quirk works by emitting an aroma from her skin, so she has tearaway fabric. This makes no sense because that costume would have to constantly be repaired when she could just have exposed arms. So, not only is her outfit a poor option in a fight, but it also hinders her quirk.
9 Ryukyu’s Outfit Grows With Her Size But Also Seems Inconvenient
Ryukyu is another My Hero Academia character whose costume seems like an odd choice to fans. She wears a dress that can grow with her as she morphs into her dragon form. While it makes sense to wear a dress because of the change in her leg shape upon turning into a dragon, if the costume can change size with the hero, there should be no reason not to have pants.
When in human form, it looks complicated to fight hand-to-hand while wearing a dress. On top of that, it makes fans wonder how much Ryukyu tries to hide her dragon undercarriage.
8 Shoto Todoroki’s Original Costume Was Basic & Unimpressive
Shoto Todoroki has a fan-favorite power — he can use two quirks (fire and ice) in one. When fans first met Todoroki, he was one of the top students. So, when he showed up with the most boring hero uniform in existence, fans were pretty disappointed.
Compared to Endeavor’s outfit which allowed flames to course across his body, Todoroki’s did nothing special. Though his costume did come with some tools, it was unimpressive and unhelpful. Of all the students with a quirk that could have been amplified, Todoroki was one of the top candidates, but they failed him in allowing this design.
7 Sir Nighteye’s Business Man Uniform Does Nothing To Help Him In Combat
Imagining All Might’s sidekick as an average businessman is hilarious to fans; they love the novelty of a stoic-looking man in a grey suit, tie, and glasses — but the costume isn’t practical. It was not made for combat; it rips when Sir Nighteye fights (though it doesn’t hinder him), so he likely has to keep buying more suits.
Furthermore, the costume has no identifying marks and no heroic spirit within it. It would be hard for another hero to know if Sir Nighteye was a civilian or not unless they knew him.
6 Toru Hagakure’s “Costume” Is A Pathetic Excuse For A Hero Uniform
Toru Hagakure’s quirk involves refracting and reflecting light in such a way as to make herself permanently invisible. However, because of this, she is almost always not wearing clothes. This seems a bit ridiculous considering the fact that the hero world can make costumes that grow with size, withstand the heat of the sun, and phase through solid objects — but they can’t make an invisible fabric.
Regardless of the reasons the writer has for designing Hagakure — who is a child — in this way, many fans think the design choice is inappropriate, creepy, and overall unnecessary.
5 Yugo Aoyama’s Armor Seems Too Bulky To Be Worth It
Yugo Aoyama’s costume fits with his personal aesthetic and style sense, but it seems both clunky and heavy for a hero. His armor was built to focus his quirk, but some fans are confused at the choice to have a suit pinpointed at the stomach area.
There is no mistaking who Navel Laser is in a fight, but he is not often in the front lines, so bulky armor just does not make practical sense. On top of that, it seems his hero outfit could have been made to mitigate his quirk’s drawbacks better and without making him a full-body tin can.
4 Minoru Mineta’s Uniform Seems Like A Joke
Many fans are uncomfortable around the topic of Mineta thanks to his incessant sexual harassment. His character is used as a joke for comic relief. The creators continued this theme of making Mineta a joke when they designed his hero uniform.
The diaper-like pants are ridiculous, they have nothing to do with his hero name (Grape Juice), nor do they serve any functional purpose. Mineta’s costume also has nothing to do with his quirk, Pop Off, which allows him to take the sticky orbs on his head and throw them.
3 Momo Yaoyorozu Is Too Revealing To Be Practical For Combat Maneuvers
There is a lot of controversy surrounding Momo’s hero costume, just as there is surrounding Hagakure and Midnight. Her costume is highly revealing — and she’s only a high school kid.
The reasoning behind why the author created such a revealing outfit for Yaoyorozu is that she needs to have access to her skin, not unlike Midnight’s quirk. Her quirk creates objects using exposed skin, but many fans argue that the costume’s design is more revealing than needed and the exposed patches of skin could be in other areas or at least made smaller.
2 Nana Shimura Has An Incredibly Traditional Design
Nana Shimura is another steward of the One for All quirk, which is the same quirk All Might and Izuku Midoriya possess. It is famous for being one of the most powerful quirks and one of the only quirks that can be passed down to another user.
While Nana Shimura is a great hero who accomplishes many things, her outfit does not reflect her specialness, nor does it help with her quirk in the same way that Midoriya’s (Deku’s) hero costume does. Currently, Deku’s hero costume helps him mitigate the drawbacks of the One for All and helps him focus his attacks.
1 Kyouka Jiro’s Uniform Looks Like Regular Clothes
Kyouka Jiro is another My Hero Academia character who has a very basic costume. Her costume is simply a black jacket and pants with a torn coral shirt. It looks like casual civilian wear and it does not have many helpful tools for her to use in tandem with her quirk.
Jiro can send out sonic blasts using her earphone jacks, but unlike other heroes that emit blasts and have amplifiers for this, Jiro just has a basic outfit that provides little to no support. While Jiro is not a frontlines hero, it does not mean she does not deserve more help like some of the other students at U.A. High School.
