Coming off his lead performance in Uncharted later this month, Tom Holland is already dreaming of his next video game adaptation, as the actor recently pitched his dark take on a live-action Jak and Daxter film.
Holland chose Jak and Daxter as the next video game franchise he’d like to help bring to the big screen, with the actor going on to describe who he would play and what tone the film would take. “I would like to make a Jak and Daxter movie, and I would play Jak,” Holland said during an interview with GameSpot. “But I would make it A24, so it was really weird and dark. Yeah, I would do a really weird live-action version of Jak and Daxter.”
First appearing on the PlayStation 2 in 2001, Jak and Daxter follows a young boy named Jak who tries to help his friend Daxter after he’s turned into an ottsel, a fictional cross between an otter and a weasel. But when the pair learn of a plot to flood the planet with a mysterious corruptive substance, the two decide they must save their world from a pair of rogue sages who would see its demise. Though gameplay consists mostly of platforming, the series is also known for its blend of such genres as racing, third-person shooter, puzzle-solving and beat ’em up. With many collections, remasters, and spinoffs released, Jax and Daxter have since become mascots of the PlayStation brand. Unlike fellow mascots Ratchet and Clank, however, Jak and Daxter have yet to appear in a new mainline installment in years, last showing up in 2009’s Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier.
Should Holland’s Jak and Daxter dream come true, it would be the second live-action adaptation of a video game developed by Sony-owned studio Naughty Dog. The developer is the same studio behind Uncharted, the action-adventure video game series with a live-action adaptation starring Holland arriving later this month. In fact, a recently released full-length Uncharted scene homages a key sequence that players of 2011’s Uncharted 3 will surely recognize.
Holland has publically pitched a number of other film projects over recent years, including nominating himself for the next James Bond. “I look pretty good in a suit,” Holland noted. “I’d be like a really short James Bond.” The actor has also pitched a low-budget Peter Parker movie without Spider-Man, though Holland has said he’d still be up to play the Web-Slinger into his 30s as a mentor to Miles Morales or another Spider-Person.
Catch Holland’s video game movie debut when Uncharted lands in theaters Feb. 18.
